In the time we've been involved with local political campaign we've run into different ways that candidates have attempted to entice voters to attend their functions and hopefully cast their vote for them.
There's always the standard chicken plate and beer pachangas, of course. Then there are the "theme" gala affairs (a la Evelon Dale Productions), mud races, charreada jaripeos, conjunto music, etc.
The late D.J. Lerma would just donate a cow to local groups for them to distribute the meat and innards in his name. For D.J., that worked fine for many years.
Now Yoland Begum, heiress to a line of upscale department stores like Joy Lee and New Yorker in Brownsville, has hit upon an idea that she thinks will attracted not only women, but women voters. You remember the first event she had at the Brownsville Art Museum. Aside from the classy environs, she also raffled some of her extensive collection of paintings during the event.
Now she has hit upon a new tactic: A Gala Brazileira Fashion Show where the participants (for a $20 fee) can have a chance at winning expensive gowns and dresses.
"She go the idea when she looked in her storage warehouse and saw all those dresses there," said her campaign assistant (and cousin) Melina Gutierrez. "Some of those dresses are quite expensive. The $20 entry fee is nothing compared to ther value of the clothing."
The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Los Compadres Ballroom at the Valley International Country Club. In all, Gutierrez said that more than 60 dresses to be modeled will be raffled.
The event starts at 8:30 p.m.
"Call Constancia at 203-4141 or Tehlia at 572-8968 for presale tickets or table reservations." Gutierrez said. "It will be a lot of fun and, who knows, you might win a nice dress for yourself or your sweetie."

Yolanda seems like a nice lady and all..BUT she still hasn't won my vote to be the next JP. As far as giving away paintings, dresses, etc. Like I said that is all fine and sweet, but what does she bring to the table on an educated standpoint or on any experience standpoint. I'm sorry, but I vote with my head, not with my heart and the fact of the matter is that all of her opponents are much more qualified than she is. They all either have law enforcement or legal experience backing them along with most of them being educated. But the unfortunate reality is that Brownsville does have some very naive and foolish voters.
More power to her.....this is the female version of the fajita plate which has won over voters in Cameron County for years. Just shows that the women running for office may be more progressive than their male counterparts.
I agree with you 3:13 Anonymous...however it is my understanding that there are two if not 3 women in this race...i know one for sure...Erin Hernandez Garcia, a Brownsville Attorney and possibly another female attorney in that race. Between Yolanda, and two other female attorneys my vote would be for the attorneys simply on the ground that this is a judicial position and I believe that while there is no legal requirement that this position be held by an attorney, I feel it should be. But, that is just my opinion. I looked at Yolanda Begums website as you have a link to it here on your page...the page itself is pretty...but there is nothing impressive about Ms. Begum.
Uh, NO!
I don't care if she can set a glam table setting for 100 people. I want know if she is familiar with the Texas Property Code and other laws that are apply to justices of peace courts.
May I say" NO" again?
I am voting for Ms. Begum. She brings integrity, compassion and honesty to this office. She is working very hard every day meeting people and sharing her vision for this position. She is being very well received by all she meets. She will be our next J.P.
Mrs. Begum may be blessed with plenty of good intentions but I have three problems casting my vote for her. Much like the 2:44 P.M. blogger, I feel we need to elect a candidate who is well educated and brings some concept of the law to this position. We do not want or need any more politicians the likes of Linda Salazar, Minerva Peña, Sofia Benavides, Ernie Hernandez, or Ruben Cortez in such responsible positions. Secondly, it is no secret Evelon Dale is associated with Mrs. Begum’s campaign. Those of us who are familiar with Evelon know she has used politiqueras in the past when she ran for Port Commissioner. Finally, Mrs. Begum has chosen Javier Villarreal as her campaign treasurer. Villarreal, much like Mrs. Begum’s son Alexander, is a personal injury attorney who has enriched himself suing people. As a matter of fact his office is located next to Alexander’s. What guarantee do we the taxpayers, landlords and local businesses have that Mrs. Begum will not refer the cases that come before her court to either of this two ambulance chasing shysters?
Vote for Yolanda Begum your true choice,,,
Yolanda runs to make a change, not like the others that want a salary.
Well anonymous(Laura)at 9:20 ...you obvisouly have every right to vote for Ms. Begum...again..she is a nice lady and all but the lady does not know squat about the law. I'm sorry but there is enough ineptitude at the courthouse now... we need to elect people who actually bring something to the table. Apparently she can set a pretty table setting, give away hand sanitizers and 20 year old dresses, but really what the hell does she know about pleadings, law, procedure, and evidence. NOTHING...she has NO EDUCATION. And anger management courses and domestice violence training...WHAT A JOKE...but let Evelon Dale keep running her campaign...
Yolanda has a vast amount of life experiences, much more than any of her opponents, this will be an asset to the JP office. These attorney's that are running, I am wondering if they will continue to practice law if they are elected. If they do than we will not have a full time Judge, however, if Mrs. Begum wins we will most definitly have a full time Judge. This is what the public wants, someone like Mrs. Begum that will be totally dedicated to the position and bring honor and integrity to this court.
you guys!! PLEASSSSE!! contain your envy, Mr. Begum and Mr. Villarreal are very successful they don't need Ms. Begum to send them cases, they advertise like crazy and they don't sue people they sue insurance companies on behalf of the people.
Do you know that according to the statistics only 5% of JPs in the whole country are attorneys? usually a newly elected Justice of the Peace goes for training and continued education for as long as he or she is in office, there are many other qualities that are needed to be a good judge, and one of them is integrity, common sense, a sense of fairness, compassion, and respect to the people before the court, I would vote anytime for someone with this qualities than for a not so brilliant attorney, (usually the good ones don't want to be JP's)
I'm glad attorneys are running...this is where we need to be..The JP court is a COURTROOM people...yes Yolanda has life experience, cancer survivor, sold dresses and hands out sanitizers. Tell me again how that helps me if my company has to file a lawsuit in this court? IT DOESNT! My own experiences in the JP courts throughout the valley where I have unfortunately had to file lawsuits to collect money from clients makes the decision for me simple..A legal background should be mandated...
Anonymous at 9:53...honor and itegrity....People that know her..know EXACTLY HOW she got her money. She has NO EDUCATION, from what I have questioned and continue to question today because I have not gotten the answer ... does she even have a high school diploma? She doesn't bring a whole hell of a lot to the table. Ohhh..and what about her language barrier? She can barely speak English...yes i saw the speech on youtube after some of my colleagues were talking about it. I'm sorry, but she is not the answer to our next JP...honesty and integrity is great...but how about education and experience...
"you guys!! PLEASSSSE!!"
FYI, attorneys don't sue insurance companies unless it's a first party claim (if you know what that means). They sue the INDIVIDUAL who may or may not have insurance to provide a defense for him/her. Secondly, since when do personal injury attorney not want to be sent additional cases? These wolves are always hungry with an insatiable appetite. There, you learned something today. Now use your head and vote for someone who is well educated and capable of competently exercising the duties this position demands instead of being a kiss ass. "Todo lo que brilla no es oro."
Laura Miniel and Mary Helen are part of the Begum and Uribe campaigns...that is MORE than enough to make me vote for ANY of the OTHER candidates. These kinds of personse are detriments and impediments to ANY campaign they participate...Let's see Laura lost mommy's campaign, then she lost Ruben's campaign...then she lost Tony Z's campaign...umm and I'm sorry you can't take credit for Jessica T's win...anybody that ran against Charlie was going to win..And let's see...Mary Helen...Ms. CAVA herself...where is the investigation into Tony's campaign...shes nothing but a two faced hypocrite.
Erin and her other idiot county paycheck lover family (hernandez) members that are writing these stupid things, let's ask Erin if she is going to stop practicing law as a personal business and devote her full time to being a JP? Let's ask if cases before the JP court will go directly to her personal law practice? Probably. The Hernandez family and their seed.....have no ethics, compassion or care for the folks in the County. All they do is take, take, take from county payroll coffers. Erins only salvation is to avoid politics like her idiot family members. This young inexperienced and lackluster joke of an attorney, who has never done anything of merit in the area of law, needs to get some more experience before claiming she has any life or legal experience.
U do not want an attorney to be J.P. We need common sense NOT a person that can not make it as an attorney.
Looks like little Laurita Miniel is PISSSSED off!!! Ha Ha Ha...Coming from you Laura...Ms. Medical School drop out...Everyone knows your the one on here bashing the Hernandez family...as you are technically unemployed and have nothing better to do and everyone knows that you hate them... You couldn't even manage to beg your way on to the GBIC board...HAHAHAH...I do happen to know them..the Hernandez's...if Erin were to choose to quit practicing law...that would be her choice...the law does not require it...if you want your question so fucken answered...why don't you pick up the phone and call her and ask her yourself...you're too chickenshit..say hi to Viro and Mary Helen for me...the other fucken loosers you hang out with..
you don't like the truth Erin, but really you are going to wind up totally corrupted like your parents, think about it
you might know how to evict someone but your intentions are totally self-serving, no doubt about it
We do not want or need Erin or Dolores Zarate for our next JP, THEY ARE BOTH WORTHLESS. If they were successful lawyers they would not be seeking this JP position. Mrs. Begum is the only positive choice we have. As many have said around town, she is not going for this position for any personal gain, she is honest, compassionate, has common sense and has been a successful businesswoman. Everyone please consider voting for YOLANDA BEGUM a
classy professional lady.
I'm sorry...but whoever the hell is on here writing positive comments about Yolanda Begum...you should get to know her a little better and maybe get your lips off her ass for just a second. If you consider sleeping with the boss and then inheriting his money successful...you are an idiot. I know the family...Yolanda was her husband's SALES LADY PEOPLE!! She wound up pregnant and marrying the guy...HE was a professional articulate man...NOT YOLANDA! Get your facts straight...
Are you suggesting that all of our judges are unsuccessful lawyers because they considered a judicial path? How stupid these comments are supporting Yolanda Begum...
People the JP court is a courtroom!!! We need people with some legal background....
I would urge folks who are posting clearly false and defamatory things to take notice of the fact that a simple subpoena will reveal your identity. The vail of anonymity can and will be uncovered. Political discourse about people's positions and ideas are an important part of the political process. But out right lies and ugly accusations that are clearly false and personal could have consequences. Mike Begum senior was a hard working immigrant who never harmed anyone. He became successful from nothing. From having his entire family killed in the halocaust. He married Yolanda Begum, who had never worked for him. Three years after marriage, they had their first son. This can be confirmed by looking at a marriage certificate and the date of birth of their first child. It is sad that desperate and despicable people who think they can hide in anonymity feel obligated to soil the reputation of a good family and deceased honorable man for political gain. Get some sense.......
@ "Yolanda was her husband's SALES LADY PEOPLE!! She wound up pregnant and marrying the guy..."
SO WHAT!!!!! I could care less about how she got married but I can recognize that she has done a great job with her family. She deserves a chance to serve the public and the community and she has my vote...
Brownsville mentality is changing... We are new blood and we want to live in a more focus, kinder, dealing with relevant issues, and progressive environment.
Welcome to the world of politics!!
