NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN: OLIVEIRA UPDATES LAWYERS MONTHS AFTER SESSION CLOSES IN AUSTIN, DEM PRIMARY APPROACHES

By Juan Montoya
It may have been called a "legislative update" given to local attorneys as part of their continuing education, but when the guest if State Rep. Rene Oliveira months after the session closed in Austin, and he is seeking re-election, then suspicions are raised.
Local attorneys who attended the free session for five credits at County Count-at-Law Judge Arturo McDonald's court said the session was more like a campaign event with Oliveira touting his prowess as a legislator before a captive audience.
Before the session was held, leaflets announcing it were pasted all over the judicial wing of the county courthouse announcing the pachanga at Arturo's court.
"There were all over the courthouse," said a local attorney. "It was more like a political rally."
Now, we know that Rene is probably hearing the footsteps of attorney Alex Dominguez, who has gained a considerable following in his challenge to Rene's stranglehold of the position for the past 28 years.
Over the years, the passion to serve on Oliveira's part has turned more into a passion to party, according to expense reports filed with the Texas Secretary of State. And when one is out in the fishbowl of politics, people talk. What they are saying is not very complimentary of the state rep. Close associates say he is taking Dominguez's challenge seriously.
If the expense reports are just the tip of the iceberg in the arsenal that Rene's enemies have in the bag, who wouldn't be worried?
So is it any wonder that Rene is calling on his old friends like Art to get close up and personal with potential supporters in his reelection bid?
"When we read his reelection announcement and his website months ago, we heard all of this legislative stuff before," said a lawyer at the courthouse. "But five free continuing education points is nothing to sneeze at. McDonald has these session all the time, but this smelled a little fishy to some of us."

It is time to look at his political opposition. This young lawyer, Alex Dominguez is bright, intellgent and it seems his loyalties lie here in Cameron County, not with the lobbyists from out of town and out of state. Oliviera is a mental midget and can't be trusted. He just wants to sip wine and troll for women.
