Brownsville police spokesmen have confirmed that the "weapon" a Cummings eighth-grader pointed at officers in a school hallway before they killed him was a pellet gun that looked like a real handgun.
Interim Brownsville Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez told the Associated Press that the 15-year-old "gunman" now identified as Jaime Gonzalez had "plenty of opportunities" to lower the weapon but "didn't want to."
Rodriguez says told the AP that the two officers fired three shots and struck Gonzalez at least twice.
Some students at the school said Gonzalez was apparently upset over a recent breakup with his girlfriend. Gonzalez shot and killed by Brownsville police during a confrontation in the hallway.
Others say that he was upset that his girlfriend had been suspended. Police officers responded to an emergency call about 8 a.m. of an eighth grade student in possession of a weapon.
A teacher had also told El Rrun-Rrun that the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun, and not a real handgun as was previously reported by police.
"Supposedly the kid was upset cause administration had suspended his girlfriend and had air soft gun (bb/pellet gun) in his pocket..." according to sources with Cheezmeh, the social group which broke the story on Facebook as followers posted live updates throughout the day on its site. Some accounts of the story indicate that two police officers fired at the student, including Everardo Longoria, the brother of city commissioner Ricardo Longoria.
(Longoria, incidentally, has been involved in several recent high-profile police stories, including the DWI arrest of former Mayor Pat Ahumada and the DWI arrest of Lupita Molina who was driving an uninsured car owned by Texas State Rep. Rene Oliveira. During that arrest, commissioner Melissa Zamora was reported to have arrived at the scene and disregarded officers' warnings not to talk with the suspected DWI driver, who was her friend.)
According to police the student was seen with the weapon and when officers arrived, "engaged" police before he was shot. He was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville where he died. His name has not been released. Media reports indicate that at least one additional student was detained for questioning. Justice of the Peace Kip V. Johnson Hodge ordered an autopsy.
"He was upset because he and his girlfriend had broken up," said a student, daughter of a local attorney.
The school was placed on lock-down and students are being relocated to Porter High School, where parents can pick them up.
The incident compelled the Brownsville Independent School District to lock down the campus and parents of Cummings students thronged to the campus only to be turned away by officers who had cordoned the area and prevented anyone from entering or leaving the school grounds.
School board members were called to the BISD main office early Wednesday to get a report on the situation and to prepare for the press conference later that afternoon.
No one knows how the student was able to introduce the weapon into the school grounds and there was no report on whether any students or teachers had been hurt by the student. Early reports indicate that a teacher may have been the target of the student.
"In the past few months we've had a five-year-old introduce a handgun into a private school and now a student brings a gun into a middle school," said a parent standing outside the Cummings parking lot before it was known the "weapon" was a pellet gun. "The role of the parents and the security at the school has to be carefully examined here. I just hope no innocent people were hurt and that the police had no other alternative but to shoot the kid."

Juanyou are such an IDIOT! You reporting in this blog is BS. Half of the information you received is false. Guess you are still using the mouth piece Of Presas-Garcia. You should keep you blog shut on this subject until you facts.
BLOGGERS SCOOP THE BROWNSVILLE HERALD ONCE AGAIN.
I am not privy to the facts here, but if this was an "airsoft" gun, it can easily (in most cases) be identified as one by the bright orange cap on the barrel. More to the point, the failure of our schools and the society they represent is well highlighted by the notion that anyone would feel that a "breakup" should be adequate grounds for pulling out the weapons. This simply reveals, once again, the disciplinary failures of BISD. NO SCHOOL IS SAFE FROM THIS SORT OF THING. Our children, at a minimum, need a safe environment in which to learn. I know of no campus in Brownsville, save the Bootcamp, that provides such an environment.
The information is not wrong. His girlfriend had been suspended & being sent to boot camp. He brought the weapon to school to scare the girl that had gotten beaten up by his girlfriend. He was warned several times to lower his weapon. He refused. Officets arevtrainer to shoot at the center mass & use a "double tap" (two shots)...
there is a picture on Valley Central from the young man's facebook page that has him & his girlfriend holding a weapon.....if its the pellet gun he used...wow...
?it looks real to me.
Are you kidding???? You said the name of the student has not been released, yet you refer to the student as "Gonzalez"? Which is it??
How did you know his last name was Gonzalez, before the news media? You have an inside mole. Ohhhhhhh!
BND hasn't had a board meeting since last August? At least that's the last video on Cafe Brownsville. What are they hiding out there?
Why don't they post their own video's on their web site?
Where were the parents of this little asshole and local terrorist?? Everyone points a finger at the school officials and local police.....but where were this little asshole's parents and why didn't they do anything to prevent this. We here all the whining and "probrecito" comments....this kid was stupid, a threat to his friends and neighbors and is no less a terrorist and criminal as the big boys. His parents were negligent and deserve to share in the blame and even be punished. Letting this creep roam the community is just as bad as a parent who leaves a child in a car.....they are at fault.
"his name has not been released" 1) But you released it at the begining of your article...stupid!
2)Stop listening to your mouthpiece Cata p-garcia, she lies to cover her own ASS.
3)Get your fact straight before you turn on your computer and start writing crap. Both the BPD, and BISD are in deep shiit and hot water por estupidos. Hope they both pay for what they did!!!!!!
Cheezme was posting all these mis-information on the FB page, why does Ricky accuses Cati.
Ricky should be busy defending himself and his mouthpiece.
"Cheezme was posting all these mis-information on the FB page"
stop reading their page, and you wont be misinformed stupid shit
People get a grip this was a 15 year old that made a terrible MISTAKE! You speak stupidity because it did not happen to your child. A child's mind is sometimes hard understand and to work with. Many have children and know this to be true. If you have children and are making these awful statements about this child you must not have a grip on reality when it comes to children. You sometimes NEVER know what your child is up to. That my dears as a true FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rick and Bobby are bitter sore losersssss!!!! The district wasn't in the condition it is now until Rick came on board. He puts his own son in danger when getting away from the cops, what makes you think he cared or cares about the students and employees of BISD. He only took care of his buddies, like Rita Hernandez, & Jay Harris, ohh and the illegal hireing of Sylvia Atkinson. People don't forget Rick was the one that hired Sylvia Atkinson.
Fuck CHeez Fucks
"Ricky and Bobby"
Is this Cata la rata, Lucy tales from the cript, or flim flam Q??
Ha ha ha....
"ohh and the illegal hireing"
I think he/she meant:
Oh! And the illegal hiring...
How come BISD is not saying shit about the killing of this kid?
I tell you why...because BISD police was wrong, and unable to handle a situation, had they done it correctly, none of this would have happened.
Cata and Lucy are not the only ones that know what went on... but whoever it is, they're right, Sylvia Atkinson was running against Cortez. Talk was Springston went out of his way to offer Sylvia and Christina a job. Wow,the extremes and how low Rick and Cortez go?
Thank god they are both gone.
BISD police were not the ones that shot the student. I would like to see how you would have handled this situation without anyone getting hurt. Put a sock on it, you don't know what you are talking about.
I would say Rick is more tales from the crypt, can't even spell either. cript?? lol
