REPRESENTATIVE RENE OLIVEIRA'S ONGOING BETRAYAL OF BROWNSVILLE AND CAMERON COUNTY TAXPAYERS

By Jim Barton
Mean Mr. Brownsville

Rene Oliveira's salary as a "Representative" of District 37 which includes Brownsville and Cameron County is said to be $7,200.   He is also retained by the Brownsville Independent School District as interim counsel.  But it is his work for Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson, LLP that gives his employer the most bang for the buck.
First, a little historical perspective:  In 2001 Oliveira spearheaded a committee to remove a line in section 3308 of the tax code limiting the delinquent tax collection fee to 15%, subsequently including language allowing a tax collection fee rate of 20%.  That bill sailed through the Ways & Means Committee of which Rene was chairman and was passed by the entire house.   Considering Linebarger's near statewide presence in tax collection, how many millions of dollars did this sleight of hand add to the agency's coffers?
Now, fast forward to 2012.  With Rene Oliveira retained by BISD as interim counsel, but still connected to Linebarger, the February 2, 2012 board meeting agenda contains an action item INCREASING the tax collection rate by 2.5%, netting the collection firm an extra $125,000.  And who is that newly named firm?  Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson LLP.  (Please note:  As documented by Bobby Wightman-Cervantes, Linebarger was a substantial contributor to the campaigns of BISD board members Longoria, Escobedo and Saavedra.)  Who pays this extra fee and the millions of dollars collected since 2001 by the passage Rene Oliveira's house bill?  The tax payers, the very people Representative Rene Oliveira claims to represent.
We must not limit Oliveira's traitorous betrayal of Brownsville and Cameron County to tax matters.  We must not forget Oliveira's treacherous attempt to effectively nullify the 4-3 vote to preserve Texas Southmost College.  Rene totally misrepresented the will of the people by trying to overturn that vote with a house bill essentially for unification.  Only by the efforts of TSC Trustee Adela Garza to lobby the committee, carefully laying out the actual situation at UTB/TSC was Oliveira's attempted sabotage thwarted.
Yes, Rene Oliveira is a representative, but not of the people of Brownsville, Cameron County and District 37.

Rene does not represent us....he represents himself and his hoodlum friends(RATEROS).It must be miserable to be him....to have to look in the mirror every day and have a demon staring back at him.
This goes for the board members who are cuddling up with himand screwing us over.
We are screwed!!!!!
Everybody looks the other way and pretends all is well.
SO SAD BUT TRUE. :(

Cameron County Politics and the local Brownsville City Commission continues to be tarnished and no human force elected can Brasso it up. The voters have demonstrated severe reactions to the propaganda exibited by the candidates and their backers who have passed along large financial amounts (or should we say "investments") to these all of a sudden un-ethical new comers. It seems like the individuals from our local area are weak in character, or weak with their income, or weak because they worship some political figure for no compensation, which indicates to the average un educated South Texan that these folks who exhibit courage by offering their candicacy, have a backbone made out of Jelly. The General Public has had it. McHale and the other blogger authors have shown a political sattire that all are disgusted with. McHale arrived from another State, many have copied him but he remains the legend in blogger South Texas Space. Talents emerge. Jokers . emerge. These dudes can acomplish more for the community, but they would rather tarnish with silly chicano nonsense. Boca Chica Beach should be more, residents from Brownsville should be able to rent a place and stay right on the beach. Brownsville should benefit from the beach. Listen please Miss Benavides. That place is awesome. We, the people need more facilities at that place. Speak up more at those meetings and do more for the general public that would love to have at least Public restrooms and covered rental facilities. Boca Chica is better for Brownsville so the residents do not have to drive through cop traps or commercial advertisements or food traps that are nothing but mind controllers.

Good report Juan, there are no sacred cows on your articles; even if they advertise on your blog. Unlike McHale you report on all politicians and what they are up to. In turn, McHale has chosen not to post any negativity relating to Oliveira or Masso.

Congrats Juan. You shamed the Herald, once again. As much as we hate the Herald, there is a place for it, unless you bloggers are gonna start running obits, classified, and public announcements. You won't, and can't.

So in the meantime, people vote with their pocket book, and cancel their subscriptions, which costs the Herald money in advertising. And that means we have fewer reporters on the job, and the ones they have can't make a decent living.

So the Herald goes from bad to worse.

Subscribe to the Herald. It's only pennies a day. Every town needs a small town newspaper. When you get pissed at their failings, just burn them in the blogs.

Starving them out is apparently no solution.

Does anyone think that Rene was the actual driver the night his car was in an accident...........

i have a brand new cadillac and a DUI said...

I do and I think it was a blow job gone wrong, he split and left Lupita to take the fall. From what is written, she was way too drunk to have been driving and it appears to Lupita was coached what to say. That is why the Commissioner showed up and reinforced the same instructions. Shades of
Mary Jo Kopechne, thank God no one was injured in this incident.
