SUDDENLY, HYPHENATED HISPANIC CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATES ARE ALL THE RAGE

By Juan Montoya
It has become the rage on the East and West coasts and now we see that the fa is spreading to our secluded little part of the United States.
Whether it's Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican congresswoman, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Democrat from California) or Lincoln Diaz-Balart, another Cuban-American from Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives, the use of hyphenated names to appeal to the burgeoning Hispanic population has become the thing to do.
These congress people are now being emulated in South Texas, specifically in the newly-cr
eated congressional district 34 encompassing some 11 counties (or part of). Even some longtime public figures such as Denise Blanchard have suddenly discovered a new pride in her Hispanic heritage and touts her maiden name (Saenz).
I am an incidental collector of business cards and have a handful of them that I gathered over the years from former congressman Solomon Ortiz's office. Some have Denise's name on them.
And wouldn't you know, not one of them have the name Saenz on them. In fact, the only time the name reappears after Denise married was on her campaign signs and material. Denise now makes the rounds locally and remembers that she was the proud daughter of a policeman and, coincidentally, a veteran. Now that's called killing two birds with one stone.
The same applies to
the Republican female candidate for District 34, Jessica "Puente" Bradshaw. We notice that just as the name "Saenz" doesn't appear on any of Denise Blanchard's previous identification, neither does the name "Puente" appear on Jessica's ID material.
In her business address in Austin, it is always "Robinson" or "Bradshaw," with "Puente" nowhere to be found.
Same goes for her driver's license, her homestead tax information, etc.,
In fact, there is nary a sign of her living in the Brownsville area part from the information listed on her campaign website. Some have told us, in fact, that when they call her Brownsville business office, they never get a response.
The winsome lass, whose bio says she was born to a Puente in Matamoros, apparently didn't hesitate to ditch the name once she got across the international, ahem, puente.
In the case of the Florida Republicans, it is easy to see that they, the prime emulators of Anglo culture, are cashing in on the strong Hispanic (Cuban, etc., ) population living in South Florida, especially around Miami. In fact, even Jeb Bush, the brother of W, flaunted his relations with his Hispanic in-laws.
Mitt Romney, for example, after considering his Mexican relatives an impediment, suddenly found that saying he had Latino relatives in Mexico was a sure-fire winner in the Sunshine State.
In South Texas, the way to get at the property of local Mexican families was for the Kings, Kenedys, etc., to marry the daughters of Mexican landowners. Under Spanish law, they got an equal portion of their parent's property. Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy lost no time in romancing the senoritas of the right families and thus started their fortunes and land-grabbing here. Thus, the King Ranch and Kenedy County were born.
What Blanchard and Bradshaw may be attempting to do is much the same thing, but in reverse. Instead of Mexican land, they would settle for Mexican-American votes.

What rock have you been hiding under over the years. Arturo Cisneros Nelson has used all his name for years.... Remember Patricia Willams...she even Hispanicized her last name to "fit" in. It has been done for years....hyphenated Hispanic names in the media and business world. In high school Juliet Garcia was "Julie" until she found the benefits of being Hispanic. Federico Pena was "Freddy" in high school....until he realised his ethnicity. You are way behing the times Juan. Hyphenated names are good info for the voter.

Why do you leave the McAllens out of this list of Anglos who married Hispanic land holders? There are many examples of Hispanic women marrying Anglo men....maybe that says something. You seem to think that all the land was stolen...maybe it was not. Why do you continue to wallow in the mire of an idea of "stolen property" when obviously the ladies welcomed the Anglo "humanity".

My friend, you could benefit from a reading comprehension class. Montoya is referring to those who suddenly had an epiphany about "appreciating" their Hispanic surname. Of course their appreciation comes as a result of them believing that it will attract the Hispanic vote.

Case in point, Denise Saenz Blanchard.

The unions chose to endorse Troiani. over Solomon Ortiz's ex-chief of staff. Even the unions don't want another Solomon Ortiz in office. This lady is toast.

You leave out our own local crop of hypenated Mexicans such as Arturo Cisneros-Nelson, and Yolanda Teran Begum.

When it is election time, everybody wants to be a Mexican down here.

Juan, those who buy you are good, and those who don't buy you, are not, regardless of what we do....WTF...you need to stop those vicios!!

Juan Montoya, John Montoya, Johnny Montoya, etc...same rat.

This posting is insulting to many men or women who choose to honor their family name and be recognized. When and for what purpose the name becomes hyphenated is irrelavant. It does not change the person.

Juanito, you know maybe with all the new found wealth Adela and Mando have been giving you for your cantina beer runs, you could invest in visiting the dentist office for your front teeth. People might confuse you with Gilberto Hinojosa. I would not visit Studio 69 anytime soon with that lisp of yours.

We live in a representative republic where the elected officials are supposed to represent the people.

Both Saenz Blanchard and Puente Bradshaw are in the unique position to represent both Hispanics and Anglos, which is a GREAT thing. I’m sure both have children that are both Hispanic and Anglo. I’m sure both spend time living in both cultures. What better candidate could there than one who understands what it means to be Hispanic AND what it means to be Anglo?

Memorandum to RRun RRun Commenters:

To counterattack any of Juan's many articles, accuse him of: being a drunk, being in the pocket of politicians, and/or being poor and not having money for a dentist.

His readers will not notice notice how you don't refute his arguments. Just inundate his comments section with personal
insults. Do not worry about the comments being moderated, some of them will get through.

Brownsville readers are not critical thinkers and can be easily distracted by our personal insults of Juan.

Keep up the good work.

PS: Do the same thing to Jim Barton, we must protect the Democratic establishment.

Yes, we need to be equal.

Juan is a good person in general. Although I have never mentioned his looks, or personal problems, I have mentioned his being paid by candidates and elected officials. If I offended him during my comments, I appologize. It was probably in the heat of the moment, and for that....I am sorry!
