DEMOCRATS SLATE CONVENTION TO SELECT STATE DELEGATES

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron County Democratic Party announced today that its county convention would be held Saturday, April 21st at the ITECC Center located at 301 Mexico Boulevard in Brownsville. Registration for delegates will begin at 8:00 am, and the convention program will start at 9:00 am. The ITECC Center is the former Amigoland Mall.
Owing to the schedule changes that stem from the redistricting litigation, this year’s county convention will be held before the Primary Election. This means that no precinct conventions will be held, and that all those wishing to be delegates to the county convention may do so simply by attending. Attendees will be required to sign an oath of affiliation with the Democratic Party, to identify a presidential preference, and will not be able to participate in the primary or convention of any other party during this election cycle.
Each precinct, or in some cases, group of precincts, will caucus to elect delegates to the state convention. At-large delegates will also be elected by the convention as a whole.
State delegates elected at the county convention will then travel to the state convention, to be held June 7-9th in Houston, and those elected as national delegates at that convention will travel to the national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, to be held beginning September 3rd.
As part of the convention program, all candidates on the primary ballot will be given an opportunity to address the convention.
More information about the county convention is available on the party’s website at www.camerondemocrats.com.
“We are excited about the county convention. All Democrats are invited to attend. If you want to be a delegate to the state or national conventions, the county convention is the place to be.
This year, we have a great venue, the ITECC center, which features lots of space and easy parking, and an open process that removes barriers to participation.
I am personally excited about the open convention process, because it means that voters will be relieved of the burden of attending the precinct conventions, which because they were held at night, presented difficulties for working people, the elderly, parents with young children and the disabled.
This means that more people than ever before can be involved, and as Democrats, that is our goal.”
