The race for the Republican nomination for the newly-created Congressional District 34 is heating up.
There are three candidates for the position, Adela Garza, Jessica Puente Bradshaw and Paul B. Haring.
Haring, a one-issue candidate (anti-abortion) has run unsuccessfully at least three times for Congress (2004, 2006, and 2010). Bradhsaw ran for Congress in 2010 and fin
ished fourth in the pack.Some of our readers travelled to Austin recently and brought us back a copy of the Beeville newspaper where and ad for Garza ran pointedly urging conservatives to vote for someone "you can trust/a Republican who can win."
The ad then went on to say that Garza, 50, a resident of Cameron County (36 years) and who owns a small business, an independent pharmacy, has been a longtime civic and community leader unlike Bradshaw, who has held no elective office and serves on no public boards. The ad points out that Haring served as a Democratic state representative from 1961-1967.
She lists herself as a first-time candidate for Congress and formerly served as a board member with the Los Fresnos Independent School District and is currently on the Texas Southmost Community College board of trustees.
Adela is currently a field representative for Congressman Blake Farenthold. Bradshaw, the ad points out, is 37 years old and lists her residence on her registration card as Austin, Texas, but "now claims to reside in Cameron County."
But it is in the following comparisons that the contrasts between Garza and Bradshaw become marked. Garza, saying she is a Pro-life Catholic, asks whether her opponent is "Mormon? Catholic?"
Garza sates that while she has shown that she can raise money for campaigning against the Democrats and has raised $70,000 as of April, Bradshaw has "failed to file campaign finance reports on time in 2010 and 2012 and failed to pay debt from prior campaign.
"In a late filed campaign disclosure form, reported that she had raised $1,480 in donations and given herself a $8,500 loan."
It is apparent that Garza's team has done their research on their opponents. for example, while Bradshaw states in her campaign literature that she sells real estate the ad states that records show her license to do so expired in 2010 and has not appeared since on state records. As far as her community involvement, Bradshaw lists only being a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 192 in Austin.
With 30 days left before the primaries of both parties, we're sure that the claims by all the candidates in the races will be closely scrutinized. If Adela's ad is any idication of what's coming, Bradshaw might well review all the claims she's made in her literature lest she be surprised with more revelations.

It's scary how blinded Bradshaw supporters are! It is legitimate to ask who a candidate is. We know who Adela is but there are so many question marks about her main opponent. I'm not sure someone who has an outstanding campaign debt from her 2010 campaign can parade around as a "fiscal conservative," sounds like an empty suit to me!
So, what's the deal about Bradshaw leaving or being from Austin? The Constitution, which fArsela Garza has not read states that the candidate has to be a resident of the state. As far as I know, if Bradshaw is from Austin as Adela claims, there is nothing wrong with that.
Tell fArsela to start reading the Constitution so she would not be making a fool of herself in public.

The good thing is that you are only one vote Mr. Blinded or shall I say Roman. Adela is the best choice, because for a conservative Republican to win the general election you have to have crossover appeal to the Democrats, Libertarians and Independents. Adela is that Conservative. She has proven her leadership by making the right choices no matter how unpopular. Thanks to her leadership we will have an affordable community college soon. I am supporting Adela because she will not be afraid to cast the right vote in Washington, even if it is unpopular. Vela is the best of both worlds. His extended family of lifelong Democrats and his wife and her connections in the Republican party make Vela a perfect representative for the Valley - and one of the rare few who can work effectively in both parties.
The valley faces major problems on a daily basis, high unemployment, inferior education, few companies wiling to invest in our area. Neither the old Democrat Congressman Solomon Ortiz or Republican Congressman Blake Farenthold was able to solve these problems. Put a moderate Democrat in office with networks on both sides of the aisle to get stuff done for us.
Vela already has bipartisan support if elected which is a big plus. Congress is majority republican, we need someone who won't isolate themselves in the extreme wing of the party, but who already has a multitude of Democrat, Republican and Independent friends and political networks to call upon to bring money and investors to the Rio Grande Valley. Aside from the ineffective wingnut loonies trying to raise a stink, no one else seems to give a damn about the Vela's having a huge number of friends in both parties. In fact it is a human capital asset we here in the RGV stand to benefit from immensely if he is elected.
