WILL IT BE ABEL GOMEZ AND PETE AVILA IN RUNOFF FOR CONSTABLE PCT. 2?

By Juan Montoya
There are four candidates running for the Pct. 2 Constable position in this year's Democratic primary.
Each, of course, has his own constituency consisting of family friends and fellow lawmen. And each is hoping there will be enough support out there to warrant them getting into a runoff, the most likely result after the votes are cast this May 29.
The incumbent in this race is Pedro 'Pete Avila," who defeated Gomez in a runoff four years ago after the two were left standing in that year's primary. Yet, that runoff was decided with a difference of only 51 votes. Gomez served as Constable from 2005 to 2008.
But there is also Juan Torres, who touts his 25 years as a lawman as an enticement to voters. Roel Arreola, another lawman, was also employed at one time with the Cameron County Sheriff's Department.
But the pols are betting that the number of votes pulled by these two candidates will result in another showdown between Gomez and Avila.
Avila, who spent more than two decades as a Brownsville Fire Department firefighter, is hoping that his four years at the helm of the constable's position has endeared him to the voters and the residents of the precinct, a large area that encompasses most of Brownsville. He is also counting on the fact that the security at the courthouse has been placed under his office, increasing his staff from four deputies to 16.
Recently, the incumbent, obviously feeling his oats, vowed to take the election outright in the primary.
"There won't have to be a runoff," he said confidently as he took a running start to alight on his service pickup. "I'm going to save the county money."
Still, courthouse security under him remains an issue following a consultant's report that pointed out some shortcomings in the courthouse security including a lack of walking patrols in the parking lot, unrestricted access through the rear of the building and roving patrols inside the courts with little oversight.
Avila pointed out that those issues had been in existence before he took over the courthouse security and that most had been addressed before the report was issued.
"They interviewed Raymond Shears, who used to be in charge of the bailiffs before and later was terminated," he said.
Shears claimed that Avila was out to get him and others including Joe Cisneros, a candidate for sheriff, at the request of Omar Lucio. Cisneros was also terminated during his first year of the probationary period as a deputy constable under Avila, ostensibly for campaigning on county time, but Avila has hinted that there were other issues that were not revealed out of courtesy from one lawman to another.
Gomez, on the other hand, says that voters will remember that as constable he expanded the duties of the office and first opened the Cameron Park substation and assigned officers to work full time, created a patrol division increase residents' protection, an Investigative and K-9 Unit at no cost to taxpayers and created a major crimes group to provide additional revenue for department use.
He also said that he created a forfeiture account and used money seized by major crimes group to provide deputies equipment and training to enhance their professionalism.
He also created a warrant division to assist the county clerks office in serving all county court warrants and collecting fines & court costs which created additional revenue.
Avila, on the other hand, counters that some of the improvements by Gomez are not the duties of a constable and said he will stay within the requirements of a Constable by the Texas Constitution.
There is no question that as the election continues, both candidates will tout their credentials and hope the voters opt for their services. Gomez lists a long string of certifications in his campaign literature and website, including numerous seminars on law-enforcement related instruction such as:
*School Open Meeting Act Certified
*Certification Traffic Radar Instructor
*Property and Evidence Technician Public Information Act Certificate
* Certified TCLOSE Instructor Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Certified
*Firearms Instructor
* Enforcing Elections Code Certificate
*Cultural Diversity Instructor
*Expandable Baton Certified
*Arrest Search and seizure Instructor Managing Criminal Investigation
*Certified Racial Profiling
*Instructor Gang Awareness Course
*Racial profiling Instructor and Gun Trafficking to Mexican Cartel Course, Special Investigative Topics, and Interview & Interrogation, among others
He points to his experience as a Special Investigator DA’s Office, Special Operation Group, court bailiff , 357th District Court Officer, County Warrant Officer, County Park Police Patrol, Cameron Sheriff Deputy , and High Crimes Unit Drug Drug Interdiction Unit membership to buttress his candidacy.
"I think I'm just a better candidate than Pete," Gomez said recently. "Last time my people got over confident. This time we won't make the same mistake. If people compare my qualifications, I hope they will see that I'm the better candidate."
"I'm going to win it without a runoff," Avila countered.

The Constable is the hind tit of law enforcement. I can't understand why anybody would want that pissant office. Maybe it is to carry a gun, wear a badge and have people think he is more important that he is. 50 years ago Mike Gomez was the everlasting Constable. He ran one year on the platform that he was against higher taxes. Of course he had nothing to do with taxes, but the ignorant folks kept putting him back in office. Nothing ever changes down here in the Border.

As a resident in Precinct 2, I don't think the Constable focuses on anything but political issues. He has done nothing to protect the citizens here, just promote himself. Time for a change.

Constables play a great role in constabilizing our community. If you don't like constables, next time you're feeling a little dizzy, call a hippie.

Constable are like the hide inspectors, obsolete. They're wannabe cops. Lazy bereaucrats, if you ask me.

It's not what you know, it's who you know. Most people could care less on the candidates qualifications. Most people don't vote, much less compare candidates credentials. For Pete to be this confident... he knows something we don't. And he is right.

Abel Gomez lists his qualifications? Has he kept them up as regulated by State of Texas? Abel Gomez sure didn't exercise those certifications as a Constable or with the DA office? Abel Gomez is another Masso protectee of the 8 liners and word that he owns a few machines? All those who know Abel Gomez know that he is nothing but a shiftless, spineless, questionable character! Abel Gomez better remember that his supporters or voters have criminal records and most with felony records! So, they can't vote! Run off? No way, and if so MAYBE with Avila and Arreola? Arreola has many supporters and they don't hold as many criminal records as the friends of Abel Gomez. Abel Gomez screwed friends and crooks and he knows it! Roel Arreola did the job and was implemental in assisting FBI on cases. Ask anyone who knows about these two and you will get the real story. Abel Gomez is also a puppet for Armando Villalobos and look where that's getting Armando Villalobos?

I bet Abel Gomez was hiding when they got visitors in the DA's office on Thursday and Friday?

Before you cheer for AREOLA ask him if he ever misrepresented a female as a federal informant in order to dismiss her criminal charges in exchange for SEXUAL favors. Ask Areola if the same female provided a statement stating AREOLA forced her to have sex and made her solicit money from Arcade owners in exchange for protection. Ask AREOLA if the same female passed a polygraph when asked about the allegations. Ask AREOLA if his life long friend and Brownsville FBI supervising agent refused to take the criminal complaint against AREOLA and if he was removed from office. Finally ask him if that is the real reason he no longer works of the DA’s office

Ask Pete Avila if he is still confident of winning his re-election campaign without a run off now that he fired his Deputy Frank Robles at the request of Pct. 3 Constable Joe Cavazos? And why so close to the election? Politics are alive and well in Brownsville. Enjoy!!

Are the constables doing funeral escorts with county vehicles for pay? Accepting cash so to eliminate a paper trail?

Abel Gomez...Still at the game...Sad for Cameron County. I remember Abel's probation period at the Cameron County Sheriff's Office. On patrol one day, another new deputy (now a state trooper), witnessed a man assaulting a woman by striking her in the face with his fists while in a pickup truck. Little did the man know that the deputy was in his patrol car directly behind him as they were entering Cameron Park. The deputy intervened and officers responded for back-up. One of those deputy's was rookie Abel Gomez. Abel immediatley advised that he was a friend of the man and would vouch that if the man was uncuffed and released that he would not assault her again. To say the least, his ass was chased off the scene and he was told to not interfere...you know, like...obstruction of justice. He pulled this arrogant, unethical crap as a new officer...which tells me that he grew up with a lack of ethics. Doing the unethical thing seems to be ingrained in him...Abel Gomez follows the long legacy of Rio Grande Valley corrupt officers. If he is elected the county continues the possibility of earning another national black mark as a law enforcement joke and continues it's vulnerability to law suits and criminal proceedings that it's tax payers can't afford.

Abel? Qualifications? Anyone who has been in law enforcement for 3-5 years can tout such a list. Those are certification courses that are offered at taxpayer expenses. What a gig...Go to an 8 to 40 hour "stay awake and you pass" course...walk away and say "Got another qualification for my election campaign". Any Officer who knows Abel ABSOLUTELY knows that 95% of his 'so-called' qualifications have never been utilized in the field which makes his 'qualifications' worth no more than the paper they are written on. Sounds like a Cantu to me.

Juan Torres is the best candidate for precinct 2 constable. He is a candidate with integrity and has no "special interests" to protect, unlike some of the other candidates. Voters, do your research before you cast your vote.

Why no mention anywhere about the polygraph challenge Pete Avila issued?

Polygraph tests can at times be a waste of money and resources. If Mr. Avila wants to pay for all the candidates to receive the polygraph, he should by all means do it. However, I doubt even Mr. Pete Avila would pass it.

Dirty politics alive and well in cameron county get a few idiots to post anything negative on blog and maybe the bum bass pulling the strings gets re-elected. Why don't you try doing your job instead of printing words you cant even understand. Let the Voters decide based on issues, qualifications and whats best for the community. If you are going to make a negative post have the ????? to show your real names.

The only way you would pass that test is if you cheated. But i guess it wouldn't be the first time PETE.
High School
College
Police Academy
Police Exam

As a former employee of Pct.2 i can say that PETE AVILA has done a hell of a good job................................of trying to poke the secretary, sexually harass his old secretary, take money under the table for numerous scams he has going for him and his mistresses and many other forms of official oppression and abuse of office. The worst thing that can happen to an idiot give him POWER.
