THEN THERE WERE 11: CANDIDATES FILE FOR BISD BOARD

By Juan Montoya
It didn't quite reach the dozen, but there will be 11 candidates running for three positions this November for the Brownsville Independent School District Board of trustees.
Places 3, 5, 6, and 7 are up for grabs.
Current trustees Joe Colunga and Rolando Aguilar did not file as candidates by Monday's deadline. However, incumbents Catalina Presas-Garcia and Minerva Peña did file for re-election.
Garcia-Presas will face teacher Donald Clupper and retired federal employee Juan Manuel "Butch" Barbosa for Place 5. Peña will face Andres Duran and Shirley Ann Bowman for Place 6. And Blast from the Past, Herman Otis Powers, will face Mary Ray and Argelia Miller for Place 3. Former Porter High School principal, transportation director, Veteran Memorial H.S. principal, and Glass Palace administrator and BISD retiree Jose Hector Chirinos will face Hermelinda Gill Martinez for Place 7.
Voters will have a chance to elect a board majority in November. Christina Saavedra, Luci Longoria and Enrique Escobedo are the only three incumbents who won't have to run for their positions this go-round.
As the campaigns gear up for the November election, we're sure that the candidates will make their appeal based on their performances in their respective fields. To be charitable, we would rather say that the cup is half-full rather than the other way around when we glance over the qualifications of some of these candidates. Ultimately, it will be the voters who will decide who will sit on the decisions that will affect some 7,000 employees and 50,000 studentns in 57 schools and distribute a $500 million budget.
Hopefully, we will chose wisely.

Shirly Bowman!!!!!the former Cummings teacher who hates children and is Catas friend? No thank you.... We don't need anymore losers.

Too many former disgruntled employees who think they have all the answers and want to do things that are not in the scope of board duties.

Except for Mr. Clupper, I am having a difficult time making a list of qualifications for each of the candidates who have filed for a position on the BISD board? Juan, how about sponsoring a forum with all the candidates so they can present their platform and reasons for running for the board. Chirinos is retiliating, for sure. I do not know the others but would like to study their qualifications.

I heard Clupper is a brilliant nutcase. I think he's running to split the vote and get Cata in, again! Clupper needs to drop out, or teachers need to vote Barbosa in! Get out and vote teachers! You can win any election, if you get out and vote!

I like Clupper. New, smart, not a piece of shit.

I like Arge Miller. Religious, ethical, not a piece of shit.

No more pieces of shit on BISD!!!

Sounds like you Cata! Argellia Miller, religous, ethical, not a piece of shit! We need a person with common sense! Mathmaticians can't think outside the box. They have lived their lives in a confined and predictable world. There is nothing etical about Argelia Miller. I guess her running buddy Cata showed her there is more green on the other side of the hill.

Linda Gil Martinez is a good friend and buddy of Cata Presas-Garcia, Luci Longoria and Christina Saavedra. So if Linda Gil Martinez wins the Majority four stay in control of BISD. Brownsville you decide.......
