Still can't get over this morning's front page Herald article about the "detention" pond at Four Corners. Aren't those ponds to hold rain water usually called "retention" ponds.....not "detention". Does anyone at the Herald ever proofread articles? Why let someone write an article when the reporter doesn't know the difference between "detention" and "retention". And, you don't move "acres" of dirt...the acerage remains even after the pond is dug. Every time I pick up the Herald....and I do to check the obits to make sure I am still alive....it proves that there is poor management or uneducated people doing the work down there. Why is this a problem you may ask....it means we can't really trust the Herald to give us good facts. We detain people in detention centers, but we build retention ponds to hold excess water to avoid flooding.
I am afraid that both detention and retention are proper usage depending on the operation of the pond. A detention ponds only detains the stormwater for a limited time before releasing it into a stream or ditch. A retention pond does not release the water. It is retained until it evaporates. Detention ponds are the more common of the two.

Maybe the ace editorial staff at one time knew the word, but now has trouble detaining vocabulary.
The Brownsville Herald isnt independent, it was sold to a private company who owns several newspapers locally state and nationwide.
Manufacturing consent has come to Brownsville, hence the misspelling, lack of proofreading and extensive lies, hogwash and nonsense.
ay aqui apesta a caca... it's CaCon! (Cameron County)
