The portly barrister who is running against Luis Saenz for Cameron County District Attorney got caught napping in an empty courtroom by an unknown photographer. This happened before he was shunted off to San Benito after the cantankerous candidate got to be a pain with his underlings who refused to sing the praises about his candidacy. While there he was a constant no-show to the point that his boss put him on leave without pay.
He, of course, called it pure politics. But pictures don't lie and we promise we didn't Photoshop this.
But after months of grumbling from those who had to work around him, the The DA's Office placed Mattingly, once its its top prosecutor, on leave just a scant two weeks before the election.
There's even a rumor that he has been terminated, which we can't confirm.
DA's Office spokesman Jason Moody confirmed that Mattingly, a Republican, was placed on leave from his job , but said at the time that Mattingly is still an employee with the office.
Rumors have run rampant throughout the campaign of Mattingly's absence from his position after he was sent to San Benito because of his "disruptive" behavior with his underlings. Some even claimed that Chuck would grow irate if the DA's staff would not support him politically.

Staff members also grumbled about his extended absence from the office after he broke his leg. His being placed on leave without pay now frees him to campaign without pretense of holding down his job.

Its sad to hear that Chuch blew his chances of becoming D.A. In this D.A. race I was going to vote for the least evil one. I just cant believe the only candidates Cameron County could get for D.A. was a horny old goat of a former D.A. (Luis Saenz who came really close to getting indicted by a grand jury back in 1996 which the grand jury issued a harsh report criticizing the D.A.'s office under the managmentn of Luis Saenz. In the report it said that it found mismanagment and even accussed Luis Saenz of having inappropriate relationships with his subbordinats at the time this administration was investigation. I wonder why that grand jury has not been made public? Maybe because its under the custody of our beloved criminal District Clerk Aurora de la Garza who happens to be related to Luis Saenz by blood. At the time it was found that Luis Saenz was having an affair with Mary Lou Munivez who happens to be non other that our disgraced former Limas bailiff and former D.A. Investigator now convicted felon Jaime Munivez. Coincidence? Wasnt it also know that under Luis Saenz administration his secretary Norma Warner was indicted along with Hershall Zinn for fixing and dismissing cases under Luis Saenz. I dont know how you Juan, along with The Brownsville Herald have overlooked this and have given Saenz a free ride in the D.A.'s race. I dont support Mattingley or Saenz because to me, they both are not fit to hold this high office, but lets be fair Juan and just dont be attacking Mattingley. There is no corruption in "napping in an empty courtroom".....I will continue to support Chuck Mattingly as an alternate to the proven corruption and filandering of Luis Saenz. If he is related by blood to Aurora de la Garza, then corruption is genetic. Luis Saenz is slave to the existing Cameron County "injustice" system. He doesn't have the huevos to make change...he is a slave to the existing corruption. My vote goes to the man who naps...Chuck Mattingly....over a man who might be napping with a staff member.
The lessor of two evils. I agree the D. A race leaves us with little choice. However we have to elect one of the two. My choice is Saenz. The reason is strickly based on Mattingly's record as a leader in the office under Villalobos. He remained slient during Villalobos's first term to issues that should have been addressed. He vacated his position during the second term while still collecting a pay check. I can't support a leader in law enforcement who can't see that his actions should be held to a high standard. Saenz may have a past but it is over 15 years ago. I would hope that Saenz would not take the District Attorney's Office back to the 90's but bring the office into the 21 century. Sorry Chuckie.
To 2:38 p.m., I guess your just as ignorant as all the other voters of Cameron County who continue to vote for these idiots in Cameron County. Whether Luis Saenz did it yesterday, last year or 15 years ago like you said, do u believe his born again cristianity bullshit? Whether it was 15 years ago that a grand jury issued thier critical report against Luis Saenz and his administration, as of today I have yet to hear Saenz explain or for the lease apologize to the citizens of this county for his lack of administration and for all the back publicity he gave to the office that should not be above the law, but uphold the law. I just cant digest people abusing and thinking that just because they are the D.A., they can get away with breaking the law or for that matter, having a maritial affair with his receptionist or having his secretary fixing cases as it happened in the past. Like that saying goes, "Old dogs cant learn new tricks" unless it is to their benefits.... Sad situation for Cameron County. I am disgusted and embarrassed to say I am from Cameron County....

Chuck was dreming of objecting against Livingston being let go for 60 days a free murderer and never come back. He was dreaming saying man if I keep my mouth shut Judge Limas and my boss Villalobos get their cut and I get to collect thousands of dollars for doing nothing because I know the truth and I could use that against them when they want to fire me. Not voting for Mattingly but that is an unfair picture of him. He is a bully and average lawyer and did what Armando asked him to do. I am not voting for him for that reason. He should have stood up and told the truth. Yes it is a shame that the public does not have a clear choice in this race. But this is Cameron County where quality candidates never have a chance or make to much money to give up a good law practice which allows the less qualified to seek elected office
Seriously? Chuck has to be under investigation by the Feds for his actions under Villalobos. The Justice Dept. has vetted Luis Saenz! The only ones vetting Chuck are his small group of supporters trying to smear Luis for something almost 2 decades old. So someone said, you have to hold him accoutable. REally, the only reason Chuck isn't chasing any P--- because he could never catch it. He has missed some of his own rallies! The guy has to have done some crooked shit while being Villalobos' right hand man. Maybe he'll talk now that Villalobos has turned his back on him.

We criticize Chuck but seem to want to give Villalobos a pass. Villalobos probable took this photo. Villalobos is a slug, a pawn to the Dumbokratic Party and deserves to be in jail. Saenz will be like Villalobos...more corruption.

Chuck must be giving some damaging evidence against Villalobos. This sabotage of Matitngly's campaign by Villalobos for congress campaign staff/(now a county employee?) is likely the "punishment". Is ratting out Villalobos the "disruptive" behavior that Mattingly allegedly engaged in?

I don't know exactly what happened in that office but Armando Villalobos turned coat on his second in command after Chuck Mattingly followed his orders and made sure that the office ran efficiently. Armando Villalobos puts himself in this situation and now takes it out on everyone. Just like his "pit bull," Michelle Garcia who is out to terminate or run off employees before the term is up in December! To hold him responsible for Livingston is a farce! All the candidates are infected by the Livingston Case. Saenz? He was Villalobos pet for all those cases that he had to recuse himself from.
Regardless of who gets elected, we are screwed. The reason El Chuckie was "shunted" to the SB Office was to remove him from the circle of pestilence of criminality that seems to surround Villalobos.
That way he could claim that he and Villalobos were not that close. All part of the spin to fool the public of how he is an innocent Assistant DA that was not aware of his boss's illegalities.
