MAYOR TO B'VILLE: PICK UP MY $29,000 TAB, COULD YA?

By Juan Montoya
Even as the Brownsville City Commission is set to decide Tuesday whether to encumber city residents with $13.475 million in Certificates of Obligations without asking them, Mayor Tony Martinez – who should have been in the U.S. Navy the way he lavishly spends their money – is demanding that the city pay $29,000 for a "Better Communities" workshop he hosted.
Word has it that the mayor – at the behest of Carlos Marin, his mentor and confidante – had scores of visitors flown in and housed in local swank hotels for the high-priced workshop. When the bill came in and the piper had to be paid, it is said Martinez sent the bill to Finance Director Pete Gonzales with the order to "pay it."
We are gathering more information as we acquire it and go through the lengthy information request process, but some of the details are already leaking through the sieve-like city fabric.
We never believed, or imagined, that when Martinez came into office he would set about to do and undo as he wished without the consent of the governed. But as we watch his doings, we are now thoroughly convinced that he won't hesistate to spend lavishly as long as it's not his money.
We will release the details of this latest splurge as we acquire them.
An apology to sailors, at least drunken sailors spend their own moolah.

Tony Martinez has turned out to be a tremendous disappointment for Brownsville. He is the MItt Romney of local politics, a millionaire that is out of touch with the needs of the comunnity. 30 grand! this is a slap to the face of everyon that is trying to make mends meet in these difficult economic times. Who is this Marin person and why does he come up whenever tax money goes missing

Did the commissioners approve this event? If not then the mayor should pay out of his pocket.

Why are you all surprise that's what elitist statist do.
FYI stat·ism (st t z m) n. The practice or doctrine of giving a centralized government control over economic planning and policy.

Apparently Tony Martinez and his bud Carlos Marin don't understand that the position of mayor in Brownsville has no real authority without a vote by the commission. Tony and Carlos want to make the rules, not abide by any. Sounds like Juliet Garcia is a mentor for the mayor also...she lives by dictator rule and UTB and wants only her face to be connected with that organization. It is the Commission as a group that needs to reel the mayor in and if they didn't approve the expenditure...Tony and Carlos should pay. Just politics as usual in Brownsvlle and the taxpayer is the loser. By the way, is there a written after action report from Tony's fanch circle jerk???

Tis mayor is out of control. We should take note of who he supports in the next election and clip his wings.

Marin is leaching off the tax payers. He is the one pulling the strings of the mayor.

what has Brownsville done to deserve such inept leaders? Estela Chaves is a bimbo without the looks. Jessica Tetreu has fried all her brains with all tha hydrogen peroxide. Melissa Zamora is just looking for a guy that will give her a job. Rose Gowen is all about Zumba and healthy eating, but looks like she goes through the fast food window often. Rick Lngoria is a sheep, the boy is not a leader. John Villarreal is a ventriloquist dummy, someone has to have his hand up his ass to make him talk...and Tony Martinez, well the man has no clue! He lives in a fantasy world of the millionaires.

Speaking of bimbos. Does Algeria still work for him. That mother of hers does not speak highly of him unless he kisses her daughters ass and takes her daughter on business trips with him other wise he is a jerk and mistreats her. Both daughter and mother have a big big mouth.

I recall back in the early 90s when Pat Ahumada was Mayor the first time. He had a group of officials over to Brownsville for a little entertainment and drinks at the old Resaca Club (remember the old Ft. Brown hotel restaurant and club). He ran up a tab of over $800.00 and delivered it to the city for re-imbursement. It got handed back to him for him to pay, nothing was approved by the city commission. Approval of functions like Martinez conducted should be approved by the commission in open session before it takes place unless he plans on paying for it himself.
