CANDIDATES FOR 2014 JP RACES LINING UP EARLY AT THE ELECTION STARTING GATE

By Juan Montoya
Following the approval at their last meeting to open the offices of the Justice of the Peace Pct. 2-3 in Brownsville, commissioner have decided to open up an application period to appoint a caretaker JP until voters elect their new judge in the 2014 party primaries.
If the past is any indication, the new appointee will probably have to be an attorney and promise no to run for the office once the term is over. Such was the case when Kip Van Hodge was appointed to finish the unexpired term of the late Tony Torres in the JP 2-2 court. That court has since been filled by the Democratic primary winner and winner in the subsequent runoff and November election Erin H. Garcia.
As a sign that politics has become a year-round industry in South Texas, there are now three candidates for three JP positions in the county. One of the candidates is for JP 4 slot now filled by Manuel Flores. The candidate who has tendered his appointment for campaign treasurer with the Cameron County Elections Administrator's office is Luis Gonzalez,  and he listed a Linda Flores, of Los Fresnos as his treasurer.
Another is Nicholas Gonzalez who is seeking the JP 1 position now held by Bennie Ochoa. He listed his treasurer as Francisco Castellanos Jr., of Port Isabel.
The other candidate, who is vying for the newly-created JP 2-3 court is Maria Esther Garcia, who listed Lynette Benavides, of Brownsville as her treasurer.
The appointment of a treasurer allows the candidates to raise funds for the coming campaign. Other laws in the Texas election Code govern spending and advertising. Local laws govern the posting of campaign sings.
Aside from their names and treasurers, we know very little about the Los Fresnos and the Port Isabel candidates. The Brownsville candidate, Ms. Garcia, we know to be the court administrator for County-Court- at-Law 2 Laura Betancourt from our contacts at the courthouse.
We also know her from our previous experience with that court, having had to pay for our legal transgressions in the past. From our personal experience all we can say is that she treated lawyers, litigants and defendants in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner.
Ms. Garcia has been with Betancourt for the better part of a decade and has probably overseen the dispensation of literally thousands of cases before her judge's court. It'll be difficult to beat her on the issue of experience.
Before she became the administrator of the court, she was also the office manager for former commissioner John Wood. That probably allowed her to rub elbows with most influential political heavyweights in the county, giving her a leg up on political contacts critical to get elected here.
We're still more than a year from the 2014 primaries and we can expect more candidates for these and other positions to emerge from both parties as the time goes on. For now, all we can say is that if the early bird gets the worm, these three candidates are already up before dawn seeking their positions.

How fucking disingenuous can you be, Juan? Mary Esther Garcia's most undeniably important claim to fame is she's County Commissioner Sofie Benavides' daughter.

No shit...you are so obvious where unstand Montoya. Sophie make the first payment to you?

I'm sorry but a courtroom commands some legal training not just being cute with a nice personality. She's a court administrator, which tells me she can organize files and is good with a calendar. Not much more than that.

Other people running for jp 2-3 are bean Ayala, Israel tapia, Raul Lopez as a republican and I've heard begum might take a stab at 2-3 as well. Heard Dolores zarate might bite to....this is not gonna be a a cake walk for Mary Esther.

To the "SORRY PERSON" you are right ... the courtroom does not command for a cute person, I agree with that but keep in mind it does not require an attorney to be able to handle the duties of a Justice of the Peace. That position requires common sense and a NICE PERSONALITY since you will be dealing with humans. Also most important it should be a citizen of our community who will be a FULL TIME Justice of the Peace who will serve our community for our best interest not for his OWN INTEREST and who wont be fighting with other Justices over wedding ceremonies $$$$.

The greedy JP in Brownsville is Linda Salazar. Have been told that she has a contact over at the clerks office that notifies her office when a marriage license has been picked up and she immediately sends one of her staff persons that direction to "guide" them to her office.

I never said it requires an attorney, but I do think the legal background helps keep the court out of trouble. What i have never understood is why thencounty magistrates and municipal judges have to be attorneys and actually do less complicated legal stuff than the JPs do and the JPs don't have to be. It really doesnt make any sense at all.

Mary Esther, Please, nice attitude? Whatever! Right now, she takes advantage of her mother being the commissioner to get things done her way. She is a brat. Trust me I work for the county and Nice? Not. Personality? Not. Fair Justice of the Peace? Definetely not? We all know that because the JP2-3 is getting appointed, she will get it, which is not a positive advantage for commissioner "mom". Please when it comes to voting for people in our counties or in our cities, please don't only vote because they are your "friend", there shouldn't be friends when it comes to elected officials, they are the law and should enforce it. Don't get the wrong person in bench.

For the record. My name is Luis Gonzalez, I am running for pct. 4 position against Juan Mendoza Jr. in the 2014 primaries and my treasurer is Linda Salinas not Linda Flores. Plenty of people know me here in Los Fresnos, Olmito, Luareles, Bayview area and if you would like to know me my door is open aswell. I will stay clear of the Brownsville political fiasco, so have no intentions of posting here again but did want to clear up some confusion which I was told by many was incorrect, Then got directed to this blog. I am a high school teacher (SOCIOLOGY) I AM finishing up my masters in public management at UTB this may, will finish up a graduate certificate in International Affairs from Texas A&M University (College Station) this August. I volunteer at church (CCD) and am very active in youth community activities across the area as a way of practicing what I preach in the classroom. I'm changing politics by putting public service back into politics. I have more for my bio. but brownsville blogs is not where I plan to discuss them.
