Remember the brouhaha that erupted when Melissa Zamora and Moses Sorola were trying to unseat former Brownsville City Commissioner Carlos Cisneros?
At the core of their charges against him was the fact that Cisneros – while on county time and on the payroll clock – was doing city business and that his boss John Wood was signing falsified time sheets indicating he was working for the county while he carried out city business.
That was one of the reasons – aside from a host of others – that led voters to oust Cisneros in the runoff.
It was always debatable whether an elected city official should have been employed by another elected official, albeit with Cameron County. Inevitably, there arises the specter of a conflict of interest when issues pertaining to both entities arise.
The recent vote by the city commission to "donate" 71 acres of land to the UT System in an effort to entice the Regents to keep UTB in the downtown area polarized local residents, with some saying it is a necessary evil to give away public property to keep the "economic engine" of a university here while others say that one of the poorest communities in the state and nation should not have to give away its assets to have the oil-and-gas wealthy UT System do what it is supposed to do on its own.
Such is the case now that we have Zamora working for Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz as a sort of media liaison. Zamora – who actually made the motion to approve the donation – finds herself having to defend the critics who have cropped up on the Internet social pages.
But while the debate rages in the public arena and the blogosphere, no one expected that the comely commissioner would engage the critics on county time. Apparently, the line between city commissioner and county employee has been breached.
In a post submitted to a local Internet page, Melissa defends her actions as a city commissioner, apparently while she was working and getting paid by the county. The comments she made to that page are posted above.
The writer in the first snippet of the comment clearly states that she received the comment from Ms. Zamora at 4:29 p.m., a full half hour before the 5 p.m. closing time at the county. The, on the bottom part of the comment, she lists herself as the city commissioner for Pct. 3.
We don't know what freedoms or parameters of actions outside their duties the rest of the DA's employees have, but we would be willing to wager that participating in dialogue in the social pages is not one of the freedoms they enjoy, especially when they are on the clock with the county.
Ms. Zamora is listed as a "secretary" on the DA's salary schedule as Slot 85 and paid from the Fund 100-4750 commanding a $38,000 salary which is some $10,000 or more higher than the salary of other personnel also listed as "secretary."
There's no question that Mellie knows quite a bit more than the average secretary when it comes to the media being a senior account executive of a local promotions agency. But only a month or so into the job, it appears that the same line that is being fudged right now is one of the criticisms leveled against Cisneros way back then.
Are we on that slippery slope already?

Sorola did not make the runoff, Juanito.
Wish you would censor some of these comments. p.s. I don't know the lady.
MELISA KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT UNITED BROWSVILLE, WHAT THE CITY OF BROWNSVILLE GETS FOR 25000 donation.
Today is Thursday, Feb. 7th. I have just finish reading a post in the Brownsville Blues at 4:00 p.m. that indicates that it was posted one hour ago. I believe that the Blogger who posting the article works in a public high school. I believe that the end of the day for students in high school is 4:00 p.m. and teacher are release fifteen minutes later. Is this a case of blogging during working hours?
Mellisa has continually gone from job to job as she seeks to climb the ladder to financial and political success. Now as an employee in the DA's office...she is in the midst of county issues and corruption. After all the campaign rhetoric about ethics and integrity she spewed to elicit election to the City Commission, she proved to be just as unethical as the rest. To add to her fall from "grace" she served as the Campaign Director for Rene Oliviera and used her position to sweep a DUI Resulting in an accident under the carpet to protect that political scumbag. So, now that she is in the middle of the action in the DA's office, will she fall further from grace and just be another part of the Cameron County Corruption Regime??
Let's hope it ain't a case of him going to your house and doing your wife during said working hours.
She is a disgrace and a mistake. We need to stop electing these goody two shoe liars and posers. If I ever ran, my platform would be that I am a son of a bitch who has seen the inside of a jail cell on two occasions. I don't take shit. Most things should be seen as black and white. Waste not want not. I would cancel funding for all sub committees that have not produced. And I would put in the city charter a requirement for results for future committees. Why do we have city departments if we need committees to be funded by tax payers to tell the city what it needs? I would provide incentives for tourism. I would spur economic growth through food vendor permits and a fleet of city owned hot and cold carts to be operated weekly downtown. I would utilize the farmers market to draw attention to these food vendors and their recipes. Lottery type enrollment. Privatized street vending would also be allowed for special events with the proper permits as well as other cites in town. Incentives for excellence in customer service would instituted, because I believe that quality service breeds a quality experiences, and quality experiences breed quality lifestyles. I would cancel the blackouts during public comments for televised city meetings. I would enforce random drug tests for all city employees and officials. All of them. I would seek to employ quality individuals with studies and expertise befitting their position. Eating in the office would be prohibited. The bcvb would be totally overhauled as well as the chamber of commerce. Because of the corruption most department managers would be replaced.Starting with Corrupted Cabler. I would cut the waste at pub. If you are standing...you might as well stand at your house. There is a lot of work to be done and a lot of people are willing to do it. I would push to sell the sports park after dissolving that committee which claims to own it. Tato or Toto would be sent home up the valley. I would put in the charter that any decision made to spend major amounts of money or give away land would be approved by the people of Brownsville by special vote. We would hire a new accountant that can actually do math. But most of all don't forget what a son of a bitch I am...And that I love Brownsville!
WHAT A BUNCH OF RATAS......

I agree with the post on censoring comments. Some of the comments you post do not help your credibility.
I guess I'll just have to remove your blog from my favorites list, although I will miss your historical/cultural pieces.
P.S. I can probably still read your articles without the comments when Mean Mister Brownsville copies them on his site.
Anon. 6:48pm
You have my vote.
I love it when she wears those short skirts and showing off that ass with her thong! Keep it coming Melissa!

Way to go Otis, only been on board and already gives the supt another raise and extends his contract. What about the rest of us? Are you giving us a 15,000 raise across the board? How dare you give him another raise without consideration of the rest of us. This is the second raise in a fiscal year the Superintendent gets from Otis, Escobedo, Minerva and Chirinos who are pathetically a disgrace to society.-
The large majority of the land the city is willing to "GIVE AWAY" is Lincoln Park, where families gather, sports are played and birthday parities for the little ones are enjoyed. What does she mean by "NOT USED LAND"????Besides I think the city will have to replace the park somewhere because it was paid for with Texas Department of Transportation funds! So we are talking about a multi million dollar replacement.
Honor, trust, loyalty? Guess lots of these elected folks just dont seem to remember these words meant something to the public at one time in the past.
if lincoln park was built anew with grant funds then the state wants their money back chiqita, and thats a fact girlfriend ask your dumb city lawyer if he knows the law i doubt it anyway.
