It took some doing by some members of the Cameron County Commissioners Court but they finally got losing Pct. 1 Democratic candidate Horacio Zamora the position of Chief Park Ranger after they opened up the department following his loss to Republican Pete Delgadillo in November.
You know, instead of improving the bridge, why not lower the river?
Out of the original 12 applicants, the three finalists were notified that the job would be reposted to reflect the wishes of the majority of the commissioner.
This opened the way for Zamora and at this morning's special meeting, the job was finally given to Zamora.
Only Judge Carlos Cascos voted against it, with Pct. 4 Commissioner Dan Sanchez going to bat for the degreeless Zamora.
Sanchez was at his best making friends and influencing people as he strives to please all in his bid for the position of county judge. With the backing of commissioners Sofia Benavides, Ernie Hernandez, David Garza and Sanchez, Zamora carried the day.
The establishment of the Park Ranger Dept. means that Delgadillo will be left with only two deputies to cover the communities in the Pct. 1 constable area and that the park rangers will have a full complement of ranger deputies covering the beaches on South Padre Island and Boca Chica.

Delgadillo stayed with the same amount of deputies that Zamora had working the same area.it has always been two for Laguna heights and all other deputies were assigned to spi.Maybe Delgadillo just doesnt know how to take care of business

Horacio has a PhD. in experience. The job of a Park Ranger certainly doesn't require for the person to have the criminal law knowledge of a FBI agent. If he was capable of being a Constable, he is capable of being a Park Ranger. If someday Horacio decides to run for Sheriff and he wins. He would be sheriff and not have a degree. The man has the experience.

it's obvious this is a power play by the sofie... why doesn't she want to give up any power over the beaches? is there money coming her way by controlling the law enforcement presence on the beaches? less than a year ago zamora and sofie were arguing the park rangers were not needed at commissioners meeting but all of a sudden they are when they lose the election. something isn't right with this hopefully one day these people will get caught like the trevino's did in hidalgo county
this is the most blatant showing of compadrismo I have seen in years. And it comes at the height of Federal Investigations into corruption. The commissioners court, with the exception of Cascos, just shrugged it off.

He was at least diplomatic in trying to make the public understand that Pete got screwed when they took his men. As for the other freaking idiots who voted for this? Pete didn't get screwed people. He stayed with the same amount of deputies that any other constable before him had.
When Zamora was Constable people complained there were patrolling to much and enforcing state law too much. But now with the new Constable delgadillo residents complain of crime and less patrols.Delgadillo needs to stop crying and focus on how to make his department work.he needs management skills and better deputies
The issue isn't whether or not Zamora is, was or will be a good chief. The issue is that the system was rigged for him. It isn't really that different from the Cadriel job at the bridge. A rigged system cheats everyone. I am trying to see it from the point of view of the commisioners that went along with this only I can't seem to get my head that far up my ass.

Well this just getting to old. The Park Rangers that are assign to the parks are worthless. They are not well trained some of them do not even know how to do DWI's fill out Family Violence Packets, accidents reports some do not know how to use PC probable cause the list can go on. They are not even professional when it comes down to public relations they obscene language. Zamora is there because of Sofia Cisneros Benavides and her relatives that work for the PARK RANGERS not because of the experience or requirements set by Cameron County HR. It sucks that you have qualified individuals applying for the position. All they were doing was wasting their time and effort in doing so. Cameron County is never going to progress like other counties. Carlos Cascos should start looking into the NEPOTISM that is going on in that department. Half of the department are cousins or related but his not going to do anything about that he has know about for years. Just watch crime rate going to up, beaches are going to be dirtier, and public safety will be question. This agency that only covers 2 mile of access 5, 3 miles of access 6, maybe 10 miles north of access 6 too and Isla Blanca Park is asking for a $5000.00 pay raise when other surrounding agencies have more ground to cover and less man power to do so. The Park Rangers are not going to patrol any of the other parks they are going to concentrate only on the beaches and that want more pay. Nothing is going going to change I lost all trust in Cameron County Politics.
When Zamora was constable and his so called deputies patrolled Laguna heights and so called enforced the laws ^ like this person calls it. They conducted unlawful traffic stops. They would stop you for any reason and violated people's rights. There were many complaints from deputy "woody" that Zamora knew about but never punished him Zamora would only laugh about it I know that there are pending lawsuits against Zamora . I bet Zamora is happy to go work with his clicka by the way if you want to congratulate him he will be drinking with his clicka at ranas bar in Brownsville. Get this , the bouncer from ranas is now a park ranger too

I hope the Texas Ranger who is being referred to here is not Israel P.! He was the worst investigator DPS ever had. If you think the DA was bad at gathering evidence you should see the mess this guy made at DPS. What he could not find he would fabricate. He would even tell witness what to put in their statements.
