PORTILLO: ME VOTE IN CITY ELECTIONS? NO "CAN DO"

By Juan Montoya
About the only thing we can think that the spin masters of the District 3 City of Brownsville Commissioner candidate Deborah Portillo camp can come up to explain her abstinence from ever voting in city elections is that she is not tainted by Brownsville politics.
But as voters decide whether to vote for her, Martin Sakis, David Belleperche or Rosalio Rosales, they might think twice about voting for a candidate who has never taken enough interest in the business of the city to the degree that she has never bothered to cast a vote in this city's elections.
In fact, she didn't even vote for her benefactor Mayor Tony Martinez when he ran in May 2011.
Until last year, Portillo lived in the fringes of an annexation strip in Rancho Viejo, albeit within the city limits. Less than a year ago – and within the 60 days residence requirements to run for city office in Brownsville – she now lists a Brownsville address at the county's election office.
Yet, since 2008, the Cameron County Elections Office records her as having voted only three times, and none of those dates coincide with any city election or runoff.
It is also ironic that at the time she worked for United Brownsville at the Cueto Building, it also housed the Center for Civic Engagement. We guess that the proximity of the get-out-and-vote center did little to pique her interest in city elections.
The only time she has voted in the last five years has been in the November 2008 presidential election, the primary runoff in July 2012, and the 2012 general election held November 4, 2012.
She was hired by United Brownsville as the Special Assistant to the Executive Director from January 25, 2012 to October 5, 2012 and paid in part by an annual $25,000 "donation" to that organization by the city's taxpayers.
Since she lived in Rancho Viejo, it is probably understandable that she would have little interest in the hurly-burly of city elections and wouldn't have to put up with the problems faced by the average city resident. How is it then, that she expects those who did – and in whose business she took no interest whatsoever in the last five years – will go t the polls and put a check mark next to her name?
No Debby, No "Can Do."

If it's a race between No vote Debbie and Narco Sarkis. I'll vote Debbie every time. Sarkis belongs back in Mexico with the rest of shady buddies.

This woman looks like she is out of this orbit. Is she really running for a position at city hall.

Never voted in a City election? Come on "tits". How can we assume you are qualified to govern the City. What a joke.

A vote for Sarkis is a vote for the cartel.

Voting for Portillo is adding another puppet to the Mayor. And is one vote of the city Mayor of privatizing certain city departments. My vote is for Martin Sarkis who looks for the community.

"Sarkis es narco" & "Sarkis esta pelon". What a bunch of ignorant people. I suggest you get to know the candidates before you start running your mouths. Become an informed voter instead of one who's decision is easily malliable by rumors and nonsense.

No kidding! Look at her backers Marin, Garcia, rusteberg and martinez. They all got money but can't even pay her employees! Bunch of lying rats. Abuse workers then let them go saying they don't have money in the budget. They're like leeches. Suck your blood then let u go. Puppets is what they want in the commission. Portillo can't even speak for herself. She has her treasurer Garza speak on her behalf as to why portillo should be commissioner. Wow!
