OUR AIRWAVES AND WE'LL CAMPAIGN IF WE WANT TO...

By Juan Montoya
For those of us who live boring lives and tuned in to the city's cable Channel 12 this past weekend, we were treated to a treat: the Juan Villarreal-Rose Gowen Good Deeds Revival extravaganza.
There was John and Rose at the Belden Trail inauguration. John and Rose in interviews at different parts of the city. And John and Rose ad nauseum on different segments during the day pulling off admirable civic accomplishments.
These two incumbent facing two challengers for their positions – Letty Perez-Garzoria against Villarreal in District 4 and Robert Uresti against Gowen for the At-Large B position – were virtually on the city channel the entire weekend.
Remember the Belden Trail dedication?
Brownsville received a $151,274 grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife to turn the former railway right-of- way into a hike-and-bike trail. The trail was Belden Trail, after Samuel Belden, a co-founder of the City of Brownsville, a fellow Robber Baron with Charles Stillman who virtually took whatever properties they could from the locals and wrangled legal titles to make them theirs.
The rail line was built over the former Belden Street. The original 100-year lease had jus expired, thereby reverting ownership back to the city of Brownsville.
The MC for the production was...you guessed it...Rose Gowen.
"This trail is testament to what can happen when we all work together, united (United Brownsville, of course), towards a common goal," she said, tacitly giving a nice plug to the organization of which she and John sit on its board as member and co-chair respectively, and which they voted to subsidize with the public's money.
She recognized all the dignitaries and then introduced Hizonner Da Mayor Tony Martinez who graciously gave up the podium to Villarreal "since I'm not running for office and John is."
For one, Villarreal wasn't tongue tied. While he couldn't raise his voice to protest the mayor's wanton speculation in downtown real estate, his red-flag investment in the Tanaska electric plant deal, the hiking of the city's utility rates to pay for it, or even his abdication of his duty to speak out for his constituents, he did wax poetic about the trail "in my district."
Villarreal then went down Memory Lane recounting his days as a youth when he used to attend Skinner Elementary School and running barefoot along the railway a la Tom Sawyer. Ah, fleeting youth!
Anyway, the upshot of all this is that these two incumbents feel free to indulge in their campaigns using the public dime and its airwaves while simultaneously going along with Martinez to deny airing the comments from the public during their meetings.
Why spend money on advertising for their campaigns when they can have the public (including their opponents) foot the bill?

The dedication of the Beldon Trail was an all out campaign event for Gowen and Villarreal. It was such a distasteful and unfair thing to do but that IS just Tony Martinez's style. Shame on all of them!

JUAN, FYI, THERE IS A CITY ORDINANCE SPECIFICALLY PROHHIITING THE POLITICAL USE BY CANDIDATES OF CHANNEL 12 (NOT 17). ASK THE CITY SECRETARY FOR A COPY. I'LL AGREE THIS IS SHAMELESS AND I HOPE THE VOTERS ARE AWARE OF IS SHAMELESSNESS NOT TO MENTION ILLEGALIIY. I REALLY HOPE THE VOTERS KNOW THIS AND RESPOND ACCORDINALY.

If it aired on 17 then the school district is supporting these candidates.

My kids and I are excited that this trail is being built. So many people here in Brownsville complain every chance they get, even at positive things. The little I know about these two commissioners is what I see at the meetings and they seem like well-rounded candidates that I would vote for again. Their opponents, on the other hand, are total nuts! Uresti always has complaints but cannot support the claims and Garzoria doesn't even make sense. I personally know the Garzoria family and can tell you that Letty is only out to benefit herself. Beto Garzoria was a wealthy man and one day he mysteriously died and Letty made sure to recover all his properties. Now this wouldn't be so suspicious had her previous husbands not died so suddenly and without previous illness. Letty is a scumbag who takes advantage of her late husbands and their families. I would not doubt it if she used her access to medication as a nurse to put something in their food. Now she is being endorsed by everyone and anyone. Encorsements are basically a promise to return a favor and people can see right through her and these groups appreciate greedy people because they see eye to eye with them. This damn lady is the scum at the bottom at the barrel if you ask me but don't take my word for it. Ask anyone our age (60) or older and you'll see that she was a pinche wila and lowlife back in the day and still is.
