FIL VELA LENDS A HAND TO FLY ROLLIE TO HOUSTON

By Juan Montoya
After the second day that  445th District Judge Rolando Olvera  – despite the efforts of local physicians – continued to suffer from unremitting 105-degree fever, his family and relatives decided that he needed to be under the emergency care of specialists.
However, they were in a quandary.
They figured he could probably not withstand the drive to Houston in excruciating pain. And he severity of the illness made traveling aboard a commercial airline untenable.
The Olveras are an old Brownsville family, with ties to Old Brownsville. Rolando Sr. is a well-known pharmacist with ties to pioneer families stretching across the Rio Grande Valley.
Word spread quickly that the well-liked judge, the son of a respected family was in a a bad fix. They scrambled about to find a way for him to get there with as little discomfort and as quickly as possible.
In stepped new congressman Filemon Vela Jr., whose father Filemon Vela Sr. had ties to the Olveras that stretched back into the old generations. In fact, both Fil Jr. and Rollie were St. Joseph Academy Class of 81 grads.
Fil Jr. and his wife Rose had made a fortune as lawyers before both ran for public office, and they had the connections. Friends say that the Velas were instrumental in making the arrangements to airlift their old friend to Houston's M.D. Anderson Hospital.
Vela's office would not comment either way on this post, but people close to the family said Vela's intervention contributed greatly to get his old friend the critical transportation needed to get him there.  Now they're praying that the specialists in Houston will be able to help Olvera battle his leukemia and that it will be treated into remission.

This is a very good story. Friends taking care of friends in Brownsville. We pray for the two of them.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with helping a friend in need, Judge Olverera is well liked and respected, and I pray he pulls through. If it hadn't been the Vela's there are plenty of other people who would have lent him their private planes. Most of us have people that like us and some of those people are rich, nothing wrong with that...

Sure, and I'm being sent to prison when all I did was help some friends. Friends helping friends.

Give lots of credit to Filemon Vela. He has demonstrated a great deal of positive character since he was elected to Congress. This show of good faith to a friend is a part of being a good representative to the people. Give him credit for good deeds for his constituents.

I WOULD TO SEE MORE RICH PEOPLE STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND HELP OTHERS WHO ARE IN NEED OF HELP IN SIMILIAR SITUATIONS. HERE IN THIS CASE, THEY WERE 'SCHOOL MATES' ANOTHER FRIEND HELPING ANOTHER FRIEND. THAT'S A VERY GOOD DEED, I HOPE THAT THE VELAS WILL CONSIDER DOING OTHER DEEDS FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE PEOPLE IN SIMILIAR SITUATIONS BY SHARING THEIR RICHESS IN PROVIDING AIR TRANSPORTATION TOOOO. I THINK ADOPTING A PRACTICE IN HELPING THOSE WITH SIMILIAR NEEDS WILL BRING GREAT CREDIT UPON HIMSELF, HIS FAMILY, AND OF COURSE POLITICALLY. THE MAIN MAN UPSTAIRS WILL SEE THESE GOOD DEEDS DURING JUDGEMENT DAY. HELP THE FORTUNATE AND THE UN-FORTUNATE...

Lots of people are diagnosed with cancer in Brownsville. Unfortunately, the medical community here in town is ill equipped to provide proper care and treatment or just don't care enough about their work or patients.

The poor and their insurance companies and, more often than not, the goverment are the losers, who are billed up the yin yang for what can only be described in the nicest terms as sub par care and treatment.

Unfortunaely, the poor and less fortunate ultimately succumb to what are, in most cases, curable forms of cancer.

With that being said, this would be a story if the Velas were assisting someone who could not afford to travel to Houston or receive care and treatment at MD Anderson.

Instead, we have a fellow millionaire helping out another millionaire.

Com'on dude, this isn't Dear Abby.

I visit this site to inform myself on issues that matter to myself and my community.

He is a good man, the pride of the town. Let's hope he fully recovers. Going to Houston was the only smart thing to do.

If two people get diagnosed with cancer and one goes to the church to ask the bishop to pray for a cure and the other goes to Houston to see expert doctors for a cure, which person will survive?

If God gives a person cancer why would God give a person a cure?

That god would have to be pretty cruel.

Thank God for doctors!

He is a PUTZ, but not even a putz should have to deal with cancer. I wish him the best of health and recovery.
