OSCAR CANTU SR., JR., A RECURRING NIGHTMARE?

By Juan Montoya
Having a daughter attending the a Brownsville public elementary school, I was somewhat surprised to hear that a man I had thought was out of public education forever was once again making inroads to affix himself to the district's payroll.
I speak of Oscar Cantu Sr., who at one time was the principal of Hudson Elementary, where my daughter attends. A few years ago, this same Cantu and Oscar Cantu Jr., who still works for the Brownsville Independent School District, were exposed for listing a PhD from a degree mill on their resumes and for "displaying their doctoral titles prominently on BISD websites and in e-mail and hard-copy correspondence."
And even though there was ample evidence that both had violated the BISD employee handbook by filling in false information on their application for employment, no action was taken by the administration and Cantu Sr. was allowed to retire quietly on his BISD pension and Cantu Jr. ended up being made principal of Canales Elementary and now is listed as an interim administrator in the district's Curriculum Dept.
Some sources indicted that Cantu Sr. was now being allowed to read to school children in some of the elementary schools and that concerned me personally that my daughter would be exposed to his persona and his values and principles (or lack thereof).
Both Cantu Sr. and Cantu Jr. are characteristic about everything that is wrong with the BISD.
Both used their political and family ties to entrench themselves in high-paying administrative jobs in the district and could not be removed until the district was shamed into removing them from their respective positions and move them somewhere away from the public eye.
In the case of both Cantu Sr. and Cantu Jr., that came about about three years ago when local education reporter Gary Long wrote an article focusing on their use of the doctoral titles.
In that article, Long documented how both "made frequent and public use of their doctoral titles obtained the Ph.D.s from an online institution whose degrees are illegal in Texas."
Cantu Jr., who retired as special assignment administrator assigned to Brownsville Early College High School, cited a degree in educational administration from Canbourne University obtained in 2005, and, like Cantu Jr., said his degree was legitimate.
Cantu Jr. at first spoke with the Herald about his Canbourne degree, then told Long he would no longer make any statement because he said his "confidential information was being compromised."
The BISD administration then ordered both Cantus to remove the doctoral title from their stationery, E-mails and the BISD website.
However, both men steadfastly denied that they had profited from their fake degrees but did not explain why they had listed them on their resumes.
Both have led charmed existences with the district.
BISD has said that they have no record of Cantu Sr.'s employment history before 2007, although they list his date of hire as 1976. He claimed he received his doctoral degree in 2005. For five years, he enjoyed the prestige and respect afforded a PhD.
Cantu Jr., who was hired at the BISD in 1997, also acquired his PhD in 2005 and he, as well, enjoyed the privilege until their deceit was detected.
After Oscar Sr. left Hudson, he was placed as the administrator of Adult Continuing Education in 2006 through his retirement in 2010, when his fake PhD was made public. In those four years, his salary ballooned from $79,528 (2006), $89,372 (2007), $92,746 (2008), and $94,434 (2009-2010), a nearly $15,000 increase in four short years.
Oscar Jr., however, was not as fortunate. He ran into a slight domestic problem after his inappropriate involvement with a subordinate while he was principal at Juliet Garcia Middle Scholol and had to take a paid leave of absence to deal with the stress.
As principal there in 2006, he was paid $74,566, $77,805 in 2007, $82,713 in 2008, and $84,334 in $2009 when he ran into his, ahem, little problem.
Still, after returning from his leave, in 2010, he was reassigned as principal at Canales Elementary at a decreased $79,119 salary, but his performance left much to be desired and he was moved to the curriculum department  at the same salary in 2011. According to the BISD public information office, he now serves as a specialist in language arts and as interim administrator at a $75,248 salary. Interestingly, this differs from what is reported for his slot in the Texas Tribune, which lists his salary at $120,937.

Who is right? And can this be right? We will be asking.
How can individuals like these continue to bleed the system, you may ask?
It might help to know that Cantu Jr. is married to the daughter former BISD trustee Graciana de Peña, who even out of office still carries some pull with "Old Brownsville," much like former AD Joe Rodriguez still carries clout with his old proteges on the district's staff.
The idea that Cantu Sr. might go to Hudson where my daughter attends – or to any other school to influence our impressionable children – fills me with dread. It should also concern other parents whose children attend schools in the BISD.

BISD is a like a litter box....lots of shit being covered up. Cantu and his son are DICKs and should not be allowed near kids. They are frauds....but BISD apparently did no investigation or certification before accepting their Ph.D (Pile it high and Deep). How many other BISD teachers and administrators don't have the credentials that they list on their vitae.

It is Graciana de Peña, not de la Peña. Get the names right.

So Juan, let me get this straight. You're concerned that a former school leader is reading to young children? The fact that your kid is in BISD is and of itself a problem! Every other article you guys write is about BISD and it's lack of competent leadership. Nothing should surprise you anymore when it comes to BISD. if you're that concerned about it, consider IDEA, if your kid qualifies. Private school is that's an option, or Los Fresnos if you can. If none are viable, well then, good luck tell your kids to question authority.

I never understood why it took so long for their fake PH.Ds to get public attention. Many people knew the truth right from the start. They both came off a summer break with the BS PH.D degrees. It was an on going joke and I for one refused to adress them as Dr. Cantu.

What about the fake PhD, Joe Jiménez and his part in the fiasco at Brownsville Doctors Hospital? Write about that.

Didn't Escobedo have the same issue a few years ago? And he's the board director of your beloved school district? So before you worry about a retired principal who's no longer relevant in BISD, focus on the doctor you running the meetings! Dr Dr, give me the news, I got a bad case of lying blues!!!!!

The former super Dr.Z. also had a bogus PHD.

There are many others with false credentials---you would be surprised---even people who never graduated high school.

How many are there that have never passed state required tests?
Someone should investigate!!!!!!

You can get anything off the internet for a price.

Puros cheaters!!!!!!!

The current salary might be inaccurate but the previous raises were the same as anyone else with his experience and position. BISD has a competitive salary program.

Yeah, how about Dr. Enrique Escobedo?

By EMMA PEREZ-TREVINO, The Brownsville Herald
A longtime school board member and candidate for county commissioner who for years has listed his credentials as "Dr." and "M.D." is neither a medical doctor nor a Ph.D., The Brownsville Herald has found.
A trustee of the Brownsville Independent School District since 2003, Enrique Escobedo Jr., who is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for Cameron County Pct. 2 commissioner in March, has used the "Dr." and "M.D." designations with his name since at least 2002, the Herald investigation shows.

Escobedo maintains that he obtained his medical degree in 2000 from the Universidad del Noreste in Tampico, Mexico.
He emphasized that he decided not to practice medicine and instead take the academic route, and that is why he is not registered with the Texas Medical Board.

Escobedo files election paperwork as 'doctor'

By GARY LONG, The Brownsville Herald
Longtime Brownsville school board member Enrique Escobedo Jr. continues to present himself as a medical doctor even though he lacks the credentials to make such a claim, recent election documents and BISD records show.
Escobedo is running in Tuesday’s election for Position 2 on the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees. The matter of his medical credentials came up because he refers to himself as "Dr. Enrique Escobedo" in required campaign finance reports.
The Brownsville Herald reported in February that Escobedo did not obtain a "Doctor of Medicine Degree" as his website at the time had claimed.

Did Cantu Jr. got a break because when he was getting divorced he hired Rick Zayas?

http://meanmisterbrownsville.blogspot.com/2012/04/bobby-wightman-cervantes-finds-evidence.html

I've tossed and turned at night wondering why the Escobedo brothers get awarded or even considered for contracts with the City of Brownsville, BISD, Cameron County and the Port of Brownsville. Once I understood that Jaime Escobedo owned a firing range and instructed the BPD on the use of firearms, the connection, the cronyism between Carlos Garcia, Charlie Cabler and the City Commission became apparent. Fake Doctor Enrique Escobedo is the BISD tie-in. But, of course, the Escobedo brothers are not satisfied with surveillance contracts, demolition contracts, etc. Recently, they were the sole provider on and expensive generator for the Port of Brownsville.

Wasn't the fake Dr.Escobedo the medical director of the home health agenc, RioMed21, owned by the other fake PhD doctor Joe Jiménez? Yeah, I remember that. Scammers, think they are smarter than everyone else, making their money by cheating and scheming, bastards.
Joe Jiménez couldn't write a decent sentence without copying it out of a textbook, moron!

AND EVEN THEN HE FUCKED IT UP! PENDEJO!

So Sr. and Jr. are retrobates. They fit right in with many at BISD, and what harm can the deposed old geezer inflict by reading elementary books to the students? Do not forget that the board majority rehired Rendon and Gonzales, both who had been found incompetent by the Texas Education Agency. Your ire should be directed at those board members.

Escobedo is a crook, a fraud, a female abuser and this shithead seats on the board?

What kind of an example is he showing our students? Remove this shithead!

Well Juanito then you wouldn't like it that a local high school has a stripper as a role model for the kids. All over FB.

Cantu is reflection of BISD and the BISD administration is relective of the culture of corruption in Brownsville. The Trustees are more interested in filling their pockets than filling the minds of our students with education. BISD is more interested in keeping warm butts in the seats than imparting education. BISD panders to the public which seems to only want babysitters, not educators. Many in the community get upset by the Charter Scholls...especially the Idea Academies....but I respect parents who seek education for their students. Still, many parents at the charter schools only seek baby sitters....but a more prestigious campus. They drop them off and pick them up but that's it. I am glad my kids didn't have to depend on BISD for their education.

I was referring to the male Dr.Z not the lady Dr.Z.

She is a very distinguished educator.
Sorry for not pointing that out.

I wish Dr.Z(the lady)came back.
