The Collegian
The Texas Southmost College board of trustees last Thursday night unanimously approved allowing President Lily Tercero to begin negotiations with the University of Texas System for the purchase, exchange, lease or value for the new University for Texas at Brownsville campus.
Asked if the UT System’s proposal to trade the Science and Engineering Technology Building for the TSC-owned Student Union, University Boulevard Library and University Boulevard Classroom Building (UBCB), along with monetary compensations for value differences, is feasible, Tercero replied: “There are a variety of components attached to this deal and we are looking at all the components to see what we can do to benefit Texas Southmost College but, more importantly, to benefit our students.”
Asked about the UT System’s vote earlier Thursday to keep UTB in Brownsville’s downtown area, Tercero replied: “I think having a university near the community college is going to be really good for the students, so I certainly hope that that happens.”
Tercero updated the board of trustees on the Texas legislative session, revealing that UTB has not responded “positively” to TSC’s proposal to divide trusteed funds in half in order to avoid losing any state appropriations.
Tercero told The Collegian that when UT-Brownsville reported Summer 2012 to Spring 2013 enrollment figures for both institutions for this year’s legislative session, the same figures used to determine state appropriations for UTB and TSC, the figures were so different from years past that the Texas Legislature “took a step back and said, ‘something is not right.’”
Although the Legislature recognizes that UTB and TSC are dissolving their partnership and a decrease in enrollment may be a “situational result,” state officials suggested these trusteed funds be placed on hold until Fall 2013 or Fall 2014, when both schools will have separate enrollment. Only then, will the monies be divided according to either school’s enrollment numbers, Tercero explained.
“If for some reason they don’t have enough contact hours or semester credit hours,” she said, “then whatever is left over in that ‘pot’ will go back to the state.”

Are 'they' UTB? What about TSC?
I thank God for the current
board of trustees at TSC and for their wisdom in the choice if Dr. Lily Tercero.
¡VIVA TSC!
Interesting comment "Anonymous". What is it in terms of specific, concrete results that would cause you to "thank God" regarding the choice of Dr. Tercero? Thus far, there only has been much talk, talk, talk.
Let's see what we have in the Fall Semester, 2014. At this point, a bunch of high paid administrators have been hired. There are no academic departments. Who will be the faculty?
Dr. Tercero has said that TSC will pay the faculty less than what UTB paid---which was ridiculously low. You get what you pay for.
And if UT had taken over, there would be no students, thus no paychecks at all. It will take time for TSC to heal from the scourge of JVG and the failed plan to rob our community of our junior college. Dr. Tercero is strategically planning the best course of events possible for the benefit of the students. Can we say the same about her predecessor? No, we can not, we can not.
if UTB would pay what it owes TSC, maybe there would be better salaries for instuctors!
At least she is honest, no hidden agenda.

good to hear that ut is interested in staying downtown. hopefully a fair and equitable deal can be worked out without either side getting too greedy!
the 'you get what you pay for' comment is classic julieta garcia clan sour loser thinking to discredit anyone who supports a new institution. they can't accept their defeat. the community does not and has not trusted the julieta garcia clan for years now. many are buried in student debt. a majority of students dont graduate the soon defunct utb. at the same time julieta garcia owns a nearly 1 million dollar house at south padre island.
the julieta garcia clan is so upset, they wont even offer cultural events, the signature series numbers, with the new college who has the arts center available.
they wont play and take the ball with them, childish, childish.
If one doesn't pay your rent in real life, you get evicted! Pay up UTB. Where is the millions of dollars that you owe the citizens of Cameron County aka TSC ???
The UT Board of Regents OWE the citizens of Cameron County big money. PAY UP, or get out. Ask your friend Chuy Hinojosa to help you out, (another low-life deadbeat)!
Typically, in academic bureacracy (whether it be UTB or TSC), any additional funds go to the administrators and not the faculty. He who controls the gold rules, and he who rules will rule in such away to acquire more gold.
TSC posted the salaries. Starting pay for faculty 38000, the would be better appling for BISD. Low paying faculty = low quality education.
"utb owes the citizens of cameron county"...and they pay us back by moving the utb administration to mcallen, and then to top it off, they will put the medical school there too. maybe we should call texas t&m to come over and make a true cameron county institution.

Why are you surprise julieta garcia and gang are the classic LEFTIST COMMIE DEMOCRAT!!!!!!!!!
TSC did not want for UTB yo run the Arts Center or the Jacob Brown. The staff from both was RIFed because TSC wanted ti run them. The already changed the name of the Arts Center. The started a few months back by blocking some events and making it difficult to the staff.
Like I said, if UT would pay what it owes to TSC, maybe TSC could offer better salaries to the faculty.
" they wont play and take the ball with them, childish, childish."
Reminded me of the way Dr. Robles, former TSC Trustee, stopmed off the stage like a little girl taking her dolls with her when things don't go her way when the vote was 4 to 3 to separate from UT. It was classic.
You can watch it on video, but seeing it live, well , let's just say I lost all respect.
Viva Trey Mendez and his Rainbow Coilition!
