FIL VELA'S "BERRINCHE" LEAVES US WITHOUT A VOICE

By Juan Montoya
In a fit of pique, freshman congressman Filemon Vela Jr. says he will vote against the Senate version of the immigration reform bill because of the $40 billion in money for 700 more miles of new fencing and 20,000 more boots on the ground included in it as a condition of support by the Republican Party.
Vela said he had emailed his resignation to the Hispanic Congressional Caucus whose members said they supported the compromise plan passed out by the Senate. Both Texas senators – both Republicans – also voted against the measure which passed it 67-27 to advance an amendment to the House of Representatives.
The measure voted on Monday includes changes to the original border security provisions in the bill that would double the size (by hiring 20,000 more officers) of the U.S. Border Patrol at a cost of around $46 billion and complete 700 miles of fencing. A
t the same time it sets out a pathway to citizenship for some 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally, who would be permitted to get permanent resident green cards only once all the border changes had been put in place, about a decade after enactment of the legislation.
The fact that bit garnered 67 votes – seven more than the 60 needed to clear the Senate – indicated to its supporters that the security amendment had succeeded in attracting Republican support. Fifteen Republicans voted for the amendment.
Now Fil Jr. says he wants the fence torn down and says he is against hiring more Border Patrol officers because "we can't even provide the ones we have with gasoline for their operations."
In other words, he is voting with the Republicans against the bill.
Well, we always knew that Fil Jr. – a heavy contributor to Republican candidates and treasurer  in some of their campaigns – was a closet GOP member. His wife Rose, who won her seat as a justice on the 13th Circuit Court of Appeals as a Republican, withdrew from the Chief Justice Race against incumbent Roy Valdez last December.
Now, by symbolically resigning his membership in the 27-member group, Vela in effect is throwing his lot with the GOP. He can always do as the Republican members of the caucus who left in the late 1990s over policy differences relating to Cuba and, in 2003, formed their own group, the Congressional Hispanic Conference. Currently, only Senator Bob Menendez, a Cuban-American Democrat, is the only member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus from the Senate.
The bill is going to have a tough time passing the U.S. House, and another chance to reform what everyone on either side of the aisle agrees is a broken down immigration system might well be decades away. As is the case with legislation, no one expects to be completely satisfied with the compromise Senate bill. But everyone also agrees that to maintain the status quo cannot be an option.
Republicans will get their fence and militarize the border whether Texas Democrats in the House want it or not. It's something that we have to live with given their control of the House. To throw out the immigration reform baby with the soap water is not a mature answer to this knotty riddle.
Why did you choose to run to be our congressional representative as a Democrat if at the first sign of trouble you turn tail and run to your Republican friends, Fil?

Regardless of his reasons this time he is right. It is a bad bill
and should not become law.

I always felt that Fil was the better Republican candidate than even the actual Republican Candidate, although to think that there is something wrong with that fact that not voting for Amnesty for the 12 million or more illegal aliens is somehow not voting for what is good for his constituents is just pain naïve. Even the most ardent amnesty proponents know that the United States cannot afford a move like this.

Much as would have been expected of him. Huh, Fil?

He's standing up for what democrats should be standing up for. Does anyone really believe Republicans won't change this or amend this once the fence is up and more boots are on the ground? I have friends that are Border Patrol agents and it's true that they are on gas rations. Some of the boats only get 4 gallons a shift, if they go out at all.
Neither party should be backing this measure. Who wants more fence?

The guy is a pussy and a Republican. We knew that sooner or later his character flaws would come out. He threw a tantrum and refused to "play anymore". He is a quitter just like his wife and the electorate blindly elected this moron just because his last name is Vela. He ran on a platform that he was the son of Judge Filemon Vela and the people bought it. He is not like his father and will never be like his cousin Manny Vela. He has let down everyone including the chairman of the Hispanic Caucus Committee Ruben Hinojosa who happens to be his uncle. What's next Phil? You throw another tantrum and you quit the Democratic party!

So hispanics can only be democrats?
I guess that's why will always be the poorest region in th U.S. One party rule, just like in Mexico. Why do we keep electing the same party that has kept us poor for generations. Why not make the politicians work for the hispanic vote rather than assume we will all vote democrat no matter what?

I'm not sure I follow. You're suggesting that Vela is taking this anti-border militarization position (a position that is held most fervently by Republicans) in order to secretly vote with Republicans? Given that the CHC hasn't officially endorsed the bill, I agree that Vela seems to be attributing more symbolic value to his resignation than other folks might normally agree with. But, still, to suggest that he is trying to show off some liberal feathers in order to then vote Republican? What a stretch!

Seriously, though: people will only be able to get their permanent residency AFTER "all" of the border militarization goes through? (mind you, this is only the first step in the naturalization process) do you really think they will finish those "securitization" measures in 10 years? 20k+ troops—excuse me, "agents" when there were only 4200 nationally in 1994?! that Hoever-Corker amendment is no fucking joke for folks in the borderlands. (and as the border goes, so will the rest of the country: forget the constitution-free zone ending at sarita)

yes, absolutely, legalization. but what is all this other nonsense? i mean, if it goes through, fuck. ten years of further militarization (as if what we have already isn't enough)? and all this before anyone can even start getting their "green cards"? is that what the price of dignity is these days?

The reason this is a bad bill is because it is full of concessions to republicans that are not in the best interest of the Valley, if not the nation. Just because it is called immigration reform doesn't mean it is a good law. It needs quicker, cleaner paths to legalization and ought to have a guest worker provision as well. One that has plenty of protection for the workers. Sure, Vela's history is as a supporter of republican causes but this time, regardless of why, he got it right.

I don't get it why U. S. citizens Latinos want to allow ILLEGAL ALIEN MOJADOS get green card let alone citizenship. These PARASITES SCUMB will steel jobs from citizens cause they're cheaper to employ especially with EXCREMENT obamie who has been destroying our economy since this caca been in office. Stop it LOW INFORMATION PENDEJOS AND WAKE UP AND REALIZE HOW DETRIMENTAL THESE PARASITES WILL BE FOR OUR COUNTRY.

Let me get this right..Juan Montoya is in favor of adding another 700 miles of border fence and doubling the size of La Migra.

Vela is against the things and you are against Vela, so you must be for them. Strange, very strange for a Valley Mexican to hold that position.

typical low information voter in don chuy.

Farenthold was elected in a new district, he was not even running in the last general election.

Farenthold cannot even run in the valley because he is not a resident in this district.

Jesus fucking Christ, if you are going to bitch don chuy don't look like such a fucking idiot while doing it.

this is why south of San Antonio you can buy a vote for a lb of cheese.

8.48 pm you got the message right? like they say it pays to advertise, vela shouldnt be crying about like george lopez says, amarrate los huevos and suck it up, we all know its a bad law but you stick with your hispanic caucus and make the best of it not run to the other side. or is he for sale?

"we all know its a bad law but you stick with your hispanic caucus and make the best of it "

Read your quote again Chuy.

Are you brain dead?

So Vela, according to you, should vote for stupid, retarded shit, just to keep gargling the balls of the Democrats and Hispanics who you freely admit, push for bad bills that only a brain dead lobotomy victim could support with a clear conscience??

Seriously??

Vela, for the WIN

Kinda agree with vela. I herd him say that he would not support any bill that tied immigration with security. I commend him for his stancw, however he will gain and we will gain nothing from him sitting on the wrong side of the fence when diplomats sit to siphon through legislation. Cameron co. will not have a voice in theses deliberations and that is not good. America Needs to understand the beauty of or multicultural community and our unique perspective. We will be the ones living with this legislation but will have no input. We lose in the long run by Mr. vela's actions, but as a voter I at least commend him for sticking by his word. A win for vela a lose for our community. In politics u don't always get what you want but as a representative the voice of your constituents matters most. Yes I understand vela is a freshman bit this law was his law to take by the horns at the very least to make himself known. Now, I'm afraid as the kid who did not like the rules, took his ball, and left home because he dis not win. In politics perception is reality, and Mr vela I'm afraid you have not left a good impression house dems or republicans.

Glad to see our Congressman Vela, vs the retards of the last 40 years, wouldn't put up with dumb ass shit or laws that served no one but a few State-level special interests...

Vela exhibits balls, an independent conscience apart from retarded follower of the corrupt Democrat shit-o-sphrere - a real Independent Opinion.
