The local newspaper said that more than 7,300 people had a Thanksgiving dinner lunch on HEB at the Jacob Brown Auditorium.
To someone standing in the long line snaking from the intersection of May Street and International Blvd., it must have seemed like an eternity to get to the front, but listening to the sounds of mariachis and Tejano groups they seemed to pass the time placidly enough.
In what has become an annual celebration for the grocery-store chain here and in other cities across South Texas, HEB held its 21st Annual Feast of Sharing for the Brownsville community. Street persons stood in the same line as retired veterans, home makers and bar girls.
HEB said it counted on the help of some 500 volunteers to distribute 2,500 pounds of turkey breast and fixings to those who eventually made it to the doors.

How many parents pulled the kids out of school for this freebie? Was the meal approved by Dr. Rose Zavaletta Gowen and her bike riding, anti-obesity fanatics?
