By Juan MontoyaJury selection began today in the murder trial of Aroldo H. Cadriel, the man accused of murdering a teenage girl whose initial trial was declared a mistrial.
On October 9, Visiting District Judge Marisela SaldaƱa declared the mistrial and also issued a gag order preventing prosecutors and defense attorneys from commenting about the case.
Cadriel is the cousin of Norma Hernandez, wife of Cameron County Pct. 2 Commissioner Ernie Hernandez.
Cadriel is accused of killing former Harlingen High School student Brisna Mireles on March 31, 2012, and with discharging a firearm at or in her direction, causing her death. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Law enforcement officers found the student's body on the outskirts of Combes near the Expressway 77 northbound off-ramp, just south of the intersection with FM 508.
At the time of the mistrial, courthouse sources said someone had overheard a juror make a statement which indicated they had already made up their mind about the defendant's guilt or innocence. Both the Cameron County District Attorney's Office and his defense counsel agreed to the mistrial.
The trial is expected to take up the better part of a week.
