THE MORAL COMPASS OF ELECTIONS: WHO WILL FOLLOW IT?

(We had posted CAVA's pledge for fair elections in Cameron County and were told that it was based on a code contained in the Texas Election Code. We looked for it and found it. With any luck, our local candidates will adhere to it.)

Citizens Against Voter Abuse
CAVA
Cameron County, Texas 2013-2014
RESPECT MY VOTE

TEXAS CODE OF FAIR CAMPAIGN PRACTICES
PLEDGE:
There are basic principles of decency, honesty, and fair play that every candidate and political committee in this state has a moral obligation to observe and uphold, in order that, after vigorously contested but fairly conducted campaigns, our citizens may exercise their constitutional rights to a free and untrammeled choice and the will of the people may be fully and clearly expressed on the issues.

THEREFORE:
(1) I will conduct the campaign openly and publicly and limit attacks on my opponent to legitimate challenges to my opponent's record and stated positions on issues.
(2) I will not use or permit the use of character defamation, whispering campaigns, libel, slander, or scurrilous attacks on any candidate or the candidate's personal or family life.
(3) I will not use or permit any appeal to negative prejudice based on race, sex, religion, or national origin.
(4) I will not use campaign material of any sort that misrepresents, distorts, or otherwise falsifies the facts, nor will I use malicious or unfounded accusations that aim at creating or exploiting doubts, without justification, as to the personal integrity or patriotism of my opponent.
(5) I will not undertake or condone any dishonest or unethical practice that tends to corrupt or undermine our system of free elections or that hampers or prevents the full and free expression of the will of the voters, including any activity aimed at intimidating voters or discouraging them from voting.
(6) I will defend and uphold the right of every qualified voter to full and equal participation in the electoral process, and will not engage in any activity aimed at intimidating voters or discouraging them from voting.
(7) I will immediately and publicly repudiate methods and tactics that may come from others that I have pledged not to use or condone. I shall take firm action against any subordinate who violates any provision of this code or the laws governing elections.
I, the undersigned, candidate for election to public office in the State of Texas or campaign treasurer of a political committee, hereby voluntarily endorse, subscribe to, and solemnly pledge myself to conduct the campaign in accordance with the above principles and practices.

The voters are also responsible for holding the candidates to this standard. It would be a dream come true if voters actually expected their candidates to offer smart solutions for the issues we face in Cameron County.

It would be interesting to see if any Dumbokratic Party candidates would sign such a promise to the people. It would be interesting too, to see if any of the ignorant voters in Cameron County even know what this promise means. We have corrupt politicians because we have ignorant voters....and we have no candidates for office or elected officials who have the moral courage to make our system any better.

wow! the Hernandezes do the exact opposite of everything listed in this pledge. We'll see how Sylvia Garza Perez, Joe Rivera, Enrique Escobedo, and the other known cheaters do this. lol

While this sounds so good in theory this is just a Christmas Wish List from CAVA and Mary Helen Flores. Mary Helen wake up and smell reality. What have YOU done to stop corruption... nada! CAVA is a farce. If I remember right you had this same dumb pledge on the last elections when you hounded all candidates to sign it and look what happened. And why don't you take a pledge to actually do something about these issues other than wanting to take credit for those changes where you had no say in anything.

Bitter about CAVA Erin? Too bad! They are only getting stronger!

Mary helen flores, hate to be the one to break the bad news, but this type of voting and corruption that has been here for many decades, just ask joe rivera who has been here for over 30 years, serves on the elections board as well, but it dont matter how you slice, dice or cut it up, this voter fraud will never stop. Perhaps now only with that picture id thing maybe there is a chance to slow it down, but stop it- i say never. sk
