SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Top-ranked Texas at Brownsville won its second-ever NAIA Volleyball National Championship, defeating #3 Biola (Calif.) 3-0 (27-25, 27-25, 25-22).
The 2013 event was presented by J&L Enterprises and CNOS Foundation and played at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Texas at Brownsville finished the season with a perfect 37-0 record, the third team in the last five years to finish undefeated. The Ocelots also won the title in 2011, finishing with a 32-2 record.
Trailing for nearly the entire first set, Texas at Brownsville grabbed its first lead at 25-24. Biola tied it at 25 but the Ocelots scored the final two points off kills by Xiaoyu Guo and Danica Markovic to take the first set.
Texas at Brownsville scored the first four points and led most of the way in set two until a late Biola charge tied it at 22. Still tied at 25, the Ocelots got a kill by Vanja Joksic, followed by an Eagles attack error giving UTB a 2-0 lead.
The lead switched hands four times early on in the third set, until, tied at 17, Texas at Brownsville outscored the Eagles 8-5 to win the final set, 25-22.
Texas at Brownsville hit .295 for the match and three players hit for double figures. Joksic led the way with 13 kills, hitting .500 out of the middle, while championship most valuable player Danica Markovic put down 12 kills and added 13 digs. Annelies Dokter added 12 kills for the Ocelots.
Biola, playing in its first championship match since 1997, was led by Joclyn Kirton with 14 kills and Alyssa Mason put down 12. The Eagles hit .227 for the match and end the season with a 27-4 overall record.

We certainly applaud the team for a fantastic season. However, it looks more like the Serbia/Brazil team. No one from Brownsville and only three from the Valley?

Congratulations to UTB. Looks like an international team. Only two from the RGV. Demonstrates the hypocracy of Juliet Garcia. She's not about the RGV, she is about everything else....and her own ego.
Great for the team. It may be "small potatoes" but success like this is what leads to bigger and better things. Great job!

Um, I would like to see your "national champions" play a real team like UCLA or USC. I guess this is worth celebrating for a town like brownsville. You are the poorest city in the USA after all. As far as the out of town players go, I am amazed they would even consider going there.
Some of these great kids will make welcomed additions to the university team in Edinburg next year.they need to take the coach who is a proven winner too. Way to go team!!! You deserve to move up to the big league!

Taking nothing from the team, who are legit champs, Garcia continues her ludicrous pretense of fake achievement....always riding on the coattails of others.
What a pitiful sight to watch someone fall from one time promise....long ago before she had to actually do something. If it wasnt for Letty Fernandez pumping the media with the feel good tale of the day, UtB would disappear. Great job, Letty! You have invented a legend in her own mind!
Brownsville is lucky that it has a University that offers a quality education and attracts students from all over the world. The fact is that Brownsville won a National championship; all Brownsville residents should take pride in this accomplishment, not look for ways to besmirch it.
Ummm, Um, they are a real team, they played against a real team and they won. You sound like that grumpy cat. Congratulations where congratulations is due. Go Ocelots!

I want a poll to find out how many people in Brownsville know where Serbia is. And, the bonus question is why did Clinton bomb the hell out of them?
It's no wonder, people tell the tale of the MEXICAN crab. All you haters are feeding into the cliche, whenever one crab begins to reach the top of the bucket, there are many more to pull it back down. And then you wonder why outsiders have such prejudice about our ways...all one has to do is look art these post. These girls accomplished something they are proud of, doesn't matter if you think it's small fries our big fries, they are doing what they love to do, with the talent their maker has blessed 'em with, and for that they should only receive applause, and congratulations! They are doing something positive and proactive, with the opportunity that they have been blessed with! Que Lastima! Instead of being negative, and bitter, turn your negativity into something positive, then you might know what it is like to succeed a these girls have! And if you look at any successful D 1 school, you will see that their athletes come from all over the world! If you feel so strong about your negativity, I challenge you to try out for the team, I guarantee none of you will make it, and all of you will agree, it isn't small fries!

Great job girls! What many of these haters don't understand is loyalty, which is why none of them will ever understand an alumni and their loyalty to their alma mater! You all, like the champion scorpions before you, have etched your names in ocelot history as the first champions! None of these haters can even come close to claiming anything for their sorry pathetic lives! Keep your heads up, as champions do, and let the haters in the peanut gallery, whisper beneath you!
