Law enforcement officials have now confirmed that Brownsville Independent School District school board president Ernique Escobedo 44, was the victim of a fatal shooting at his home on Larkspur Drive early this afternoon.
Reports say that BISD Police Chief Carlos Garcia was alerted by Superintendent Carl Montoya to the shooting incident and arrived to find Escobedo already dead with a single gunshot wound to the head. Family members were said to have gone looking for Escobedo after he failed to show up for a public event.Details of the incident report are still unavailable and district authorities have not issued any statements.
It is unknown whether the shooting was a result of an accident, an assault, or self-inflicted. However, some reports indicate that there appeared to be no confrontation involved. Authorities believe the weapon used by Escobedo was a small caliber handgun.
Escobedo had recently filed to run for Cameron County District Clerk.
Friends who saw Escobedo Wednesday evening at a local lawyer's Christmas party said he appeared to be in fine spirits and said that when they called his home after they learned of the reports late Thursday they were answered by a distraught woman.
Reports indicate that Justice of the Peace 2-1 Linda Salazar was called to perform the inquest at the scene.
A law enforcement source on condition of anonymity early Thursday afternoon confirmed that the reports of Escobedo's death were true.

met him in 2003 when he first ran for school board. i was a moderator at a political forum. his opponent at the time was hugh emerson. a sincere guy too , kind hearted as well. I also remember him in 2010 when he came to a political function for blake farenthold. The political community is in shock. Just saw him last month at his fundraiser at cobbleheads. May he rest in peace and condolences to his family at this time.

I only met Dr,. Escobedo once, at his firing range. I was there out of curiosity. I didn't know Dr. Escobedo and he didn't know me. But he was very friendly, very cordial and I felt completely at ease with him. RIP, Dr. Escobedo.
