AMBER AND SYLVIA: LA MISMA GATA PERO DIFFERENT TUNE?

By Juan Montoya
Many of us thought that when Amber Medina beat out Carlos Masso for the chairmanship (personship?) of the Cameron County Democratic Party though the days of favoritism by the chair toward certain candidates were over.
We had seen the outgoing chair Sylvia Perez-Garza (now running for county clerk) openly favor Erin Hernandez-Garcia over her opponent Yolanda Begum in their runoff race in 2012. She appeared with her at parties, campaign events and on her Facebook pages like they were great bods. The though that she had to show some impartiality toward all candidates seemed lost to her.
With Amber, we thought, those days were over.
Alas, it seems our conclusions were premature.
This time, we have been told that Amber has shown her lack of transparency and impartiality in the race for Cameron County Commissioner for Pct. 4 where incumbent Dan Sanchez is facing two opponents. Dan, however, drew the middle spot between Juan Roberto Kornegay and Dan Brewer. Many observers will tell you that you are better off either at the top or on the bottom of the ballot, but not in the middle spot that Sanchez drew.
Now, however, we have been told that although Kornegay's name is on the ballot where it should be (at the top), his first name (Roberto), was somehow changed to "Robert," the English translation.
We have also been told that when his supporters saw that at the Cameron County Elections Office they brought that to the attention of Administrator Chris Davis. Davis, they said, told  them that his office does not decide how the names appear on the ballot, but rather, that the party chairperson did.
In fact, eagle-eyed Davis had spotted the change in the spelling earlier and called Amber personally to inquire whether a mistake had been made and Amber assured him that there had been none and to put the name on the ballot as she had given it to him.
When Amber Medina was approached, she just said it was a done deal and said nothing could be done about it.
Now, if it were just a matter of someone making an honest mistake, it might be understood. But we're in Hispanic South Texas, and in fact, Pct. 4 is overwhelmingly so. When an Hispanic  voter walks into the booth, glances at the names and sees a Kornegay and a Brewer and then spots a Sanchez sandwiched in the middle, the tendency is to go for the Sanchez.
Then, if the voter thought that Esquivel might simply be a misspelling for Esquire, the title some hoity-doity lawyers use, the confusion would be even worse.
We wondered whether it had been a knee-jerk reaction on Amber's part to baptise Juan Roberto with the English first name so we sought out the appointment of treasurer form that all first-time candidates fill in with the election's office and lo and behold! the candidate had filled it out as Juan Roberto Kornegay Esquivel, not Robert. Then we sought out the campaign finance report and, again, there was no "Robert" anywhere, just Juan Roberto Kornegay Esquivel.
Why, then, the Robert on the Democratic ballot?
Unlike Dan, Juan Roberto has never gone by the Anglicized name, so why did the party chair? Is Amber truly opaque on the spelling of Hispanic names, or just deliberately so in this particular case?

It is a sad expression of racism where the absence of an o on the candidates name costs him votes.

Amber is COMPLETELY biased. You know exactly who her favorites are.

I guess Amber is taking a page from the "Master of Disater" Sylvia Perez Garza playbook.

WTF, people do not make up their names when they use them for official business, even if this is some shithole border town.

I'm going for Stephan Don Juan Diego Brewer, and ignoring those other fake-ass Hispanic dudes on the ballot! Besides they are both sort of creepy.

True...so true.

What's going on at the Port Juan? Seems like you've been preoccupied with elections that you have not kept up with shenanigans at the port. They've been hiring consultants galore including salomon Torres and others. Same ole bs.

Thank you to all the idiots that voted her in at that party meeting - Cindy Hinojosa, Teresa Saldivar, Letty Garzoria, Yolanda Begum, Zeke Silva, etc. Not that we'd be better off with Masso, but your anti-Sylvia rage blinded you from making a good decision. Let's hope your anti-Ernie rage doesn't land us another idiot in office. Vote wisely.

"Why, then, the Robert on the Democratic ballot?"

Because that's how he filed his candidacy form with the party chair. And for ballot purposes, that's all that matters.

She is a Gilbert Hinojosa and Cyndi Hinojosa puppet.

Montoya, if you do some checking? You'll find that Kornegay's real name is Juan Roberto Kornegay, period! This man is using Esquivel to get that Hispanic vote knowing that a "gringo" name will not be voted for! Did he use this name when filing for the seat? I would think that there might be a violation with the Elections Ethics Board in Austin? The only reason that this guy is running and hoping to win is to eliminate the Bond Board who is currently trying to collect from Esquivel Bond Company because of absconders! I really hope that Amber Medina is not another puppet to anyone?

And the beat goes on in Cameron County.....we don't just accept corruption, we demand it. And the Dumbokratic Party gives of plenty.

This is hilarious and sad at the same time...as it really tells a lot about the poster. Talk about a puppet, look in the mirror.

Since you insist on calling me out by name, then why not have the courage to sign your own name to your comments? Oh...that is right you have no courage. All you can muster is comments that have no merits whatsoever.

Let me set this BS straight once and for all.

I had none, nor have any rage toward anyone. That was a self-serving rumor by the one who started that rumor. None of you have done anything that warrants my rage.

Now, my disgust, yes. That you have managed to do, disgust me with your petty BS and how you continue to try and drag the party down.

Certain people wanted to make me out to be the scapegoat for the backlash Sylvia experienced for her own bad exit strategy. Too bad for them I am not an easy mark nor do I care, because it is all BS. They know it and I know it. So get over it, I have. Lol.

Those before us act all innocent, yet it was their poor management that brought the party down. They had their opportunity and they blew chunks! No documentation, nothing nada.

You would not recognize a good decision if it smacked you in the face. Why be part of something you claim to loathe.

Amber is a good person. Many want to bring her down, even though she has done nothing to any of you, just as I have not done anything either; other than to attempt to bring back credibility and organization into the Party. Oooh that is so terrible...ooh bad people...ooh. Laughable.

Juan Montoya, you know better. What you claim is untrue. You do better when you stick to the facts.

Will you be part of the problems plaguing our county party or will you be part of the solution?

It is up to you the individual.

Juan - I sent you Kornegay Esquivel's candidate application yesterday via email. I can't attach or copy here in the comment section; it doesn't give me that option. He requested in his application to be on the ballot as "Robert". You can see that in the application. That is why his name is on the ballot that way and for no other reason.

Former law enforcement officer said...

Check his Naturalization papers and he is documented as Juan Roberto Kornegay. Where is the relation to an Esquivel? Is he even an Esquivel?

Amber Medina said...

Additionally, I have spoken with Mr. Kornegay Esquivel about this at length and he is fine with the ballot and has no problem. You can confirm that with him. There is no issue regarding his name as Robert.

Former county employee said...

@Amber Medina, how is this Esquivel even related? No where is his name does he have Esquivel? So, why?
