Will Brownsville, Texas, the "Poorest City in the United States," Really Give Lincoln Park to the University of Texas System? Part I
is always the giver.
The University of Texas system is the taker, eagerly gobbling up precious assets from this
poorest of cities, based on a thinly veiled threat to pull their satellite campus out of town.
Brownsville's City Commission, including the mayor, are easily duped because they have no concept of negotiations, suffer from a regional inferiority complex and, in some cases, do not understand that their oath of office includes protecting, not squandering or giving away the assets of 200,000 of the country's hardest working taxpayers.
First of all, make no mistake, the University of Texas was NEVER leaving Brownsville without a satellite campus. That would have been a colossal public relations mistake. The UT Regents are not country bumpkins and are expanding their university, not shrinking it. One of the richest universities in the world leaving the poorest city in

The UT Regents are not country bumpkins and are expanding their university, not shrinking it. One of the richest universities in the world leaving the poorest city in
the United States without its four year university? UT is not that dumb. That would have been a public relations nightmare with the Brownsville Herald possibly being the only newspaper in the country not picking up on the
story of how a university system with billions in its coffers robbed, raped and pillaged a 90% Hispanic community
with the lowest per capita income in the country.(Don't forget that the current value of the Permanent University Fund of the University of Texas, just one of its funding sources, based on the investments from oil and other
revenues from 2,000,000 acres of land, is worth $17 billion.)
In their bush league eagerness to "keep" a satellite of the
Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez |
UT system in town, Brownsville's City Commission
foolishly offered to "donate" two parcels of land to the
system totally 76 acres. This is evidently what the executive session item on the agenda of the coming February 4, 2014 City Commission meeting is all about. I understand one of the
parcels the city wants to "donate" to the UT system is
Lincoln Park. WTF? A sort of resolution was adopted,
worded something to the effect that if the newest version of
UT's Brownsville campus was located downtown, this
donation of land would be consummated.
Despite the City Commission's frantic mayor-driven
Despite the City Commission's frantic mayor-driven
purchases of numerous obviously unsuitable properties downtown, the UT regents decided to stay on the
campuses they had always used. There was no interest in Casa del Nylon or ten other loosely affiliated
properties Tony and the commission bought. So, now we have the issue of this resolution and land giveaway
that will be considered February 4th in a scheduled 15 minute executive session.
More on this in the next couple of days.(We'll endeavor to discuss the impact that losing Lincoln Park would

Hey Martinez, please step down. You are not smart at all and have no business in the mayor chair. You always seem lost in the meetings. Who am I? I have a Masters and PHD from Yale, strong business owner. Trust me, you have no business in that chair. Please do the citizens a huge favor.
By what Authority is the Brville mayor giving away property that belongs to the City! ?
juan i thought its against the law for any city to give away anything of value that belongs to a city? does it needs to go out for auction or bids? Or has mayor martinez changed the laws recently? just wondering?
Perhaps we are seeing here a re-enactment of the way property was transferred in years past. This "give a way" is an example of how property transferred in the past, with the "hope" that life would be better in the future. And, of course, this land is not the property of Tony Martinez and he seems willing to give up everything to save Julieta's ass....and that is a big ass. Why not accept reality...UT is going to the upper Valley..McAllen and even Harlingen, because they are willing to contribute and build to attract UT....Brownsville is not willing to pay and not willing to give anything except downtown....a loser. We continue to swirl down the drain while the upper Valley is willing to offer incentives. Tony Martinez is a DICK
The reason why '...We continue to swirl down the drain..." Brownsville does not have a STRONG PRIVATE SECTOR BUSINESS BASE NOR A STRONG PRIVATE SECTOR EMPLOYEE BASE that would generate more tax revenue collected. Then Brown town would be in a position to offer more.
Brownsville's problem is there's more TAKERS THAN PRODUCERS. For example who are the major employers in town-BISD, UTB, THE CITY, COUNTY and all governmental related agencies, all of these people are TAKERS PRODUCE NOTHING AND ARE BEEN PAID BY TAX DOLLARS. Then the second major group of people that live here are welfare recipients, and illegal aliens MAJOR TAKERS CAUSE THEY DON'T EVEN WORK OR IF THEY DO THEY'RE PAID UNDER THE TABLE HENCE PAY NO NO TAXES are collected.
How can Brownsville prosper when there's fewer private sector tax payers than tax takers leeches. Now I've gotten into heated discussion with tax takers and argue they pay taxes too but what they can't get through their thick head is the taxes they pay, that money came from a PRIVATE SECTOR TAX PAYER THAT PAID FOR HIIS/HERS WAGES.
If democRATS would be honest, realist, or intelligent, when an area has more takers than producers, those areas are depressed, poor, and failing such as DETROIT, CHICAGO, MANY PARTS OF CALIFORNIA. You people pay close and watch NYC will start to "swirl down the drain" with the new EXTREMIST LIBERAL/COMMIE MAYOR they just elected.
Bottom line when democRATS are in control the economy always goes south MAJOR KILLERS OF PROSPERITY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM.
sell the land and give the city employees a raise.
I agree it doesn't look positive when looking in isolation at the 'gift' of land to UT. However, there also would have been a negative effect on the City of Brownsville if the University had left on the city.
