The Hernandez vote-harvesting machine is history.
In no uncertain terms, voters sent a message to Cameron County Pct.2 commissioner Ernie Hernandez and his daughter JP 2-2 Erin Hernandez Garcia that they'd had enough and voted them out. They will leave public office once their terms expire at the end of the year.
With 66 percent of the county's 102 precincts reporting, Juan Magallanes was leading Gloria Rincones for the 357th District Court race, Joe Rivera was headed for a runoff with Ruben Peña in the county judge's race, Art McDonald had trounced Daniel Robles for County Court-at-Law #1, David Gonzales had a prohibitive 10 percentage point lead over challenger Dolores Zarate for the County Court-at-Law position, and Eric Garza was headed for a runoff with Elvira Ortiz for district clerk.
Arnold Flores and Sylvia Garza Perez will apparently face each other in the runoff for county clerk. Alex Dominguez and Leonel Lopez will face each other in the runoff for the Pct. 2 commissioner position, while incumbent Ernie Hernandez was shunned by the voters, of which only 18.52 percent followed his siren song.
In Pct. 4, commissioner Dan Sanchez appeared to have survived a challenge by two opponents (9 or 26 precincts reporting) early in the early evening totals.
Yolanda Teran Begum, who lost to Erin Hernandez Garcia in 2012, came back to make the runoff against attorney Jonathan Gracia for JP 2-2, who won by a little over 300 votes. This will be a hotly contested race and nothing is guaranteed the winner of this first go-round. With only 12 mail-in votes, Hernandez Garcia did not make the cut. In fact, it was Gracia who garnered more of those mail-ins (29) compared to Begum's 14.
Meanwhile, Mary Esther Garcia will face off former constable Pete Avila in the runoff for the new JP 2-3 position. Avila and Brownsville Independent School District trustee Minerva Peña were in a neck-to-neck race until the end when Avila pulled ahead at the end.
Thus ends the vote-harvesting Hernandez dynasty, not with a bang, but with a whimper.
(The Brownsville Herald published these updated unofficial results late into the night.)

Goodbye Ernie, goodbye Erin.
OK, this is messed up. Who the hell would vote for Ernie - this moron has no integrity. Now Erin, well, if the vote is on her beauty, then she has my vote, but if it is for her profession, SORRY - NO VOTE!!!!!
Woo-hoo! Way to go, David! I'm so glad David won not only because I consider him a friend but also because I cannot stand that idiot Zarate and her pendejo husband Sergio. That down by the border crap is just a front to steal money from down syndrome kids who really need the help. So happy those crooks lost!!!
Juan, the big story will be which oFfice three-time loser Letty Perez Garzoria says she will seek next. Jim Barton must be crying in his huevos rancheros. LOL!!!
I think you have four readers now.
Na na na na! Na na na na! Hey! Hey! Hey! GOODBYE! Losers! Messed with the wrong people! Ernie, you thought all those years of city experience amounted to something?! Erin, you thought you could play in the BIG leagues (not PIG leagues)?! Well, now Ernie will be convicted, Erin, will get indicted, and Bobby, will get run out of town, like he did in Dallas! You all still want to try messing with the wrong people? You aren't even on our level! Politics 101 baby! Hernandez's learned the hard way! Ha Ha Ha! Fucken Losers!
Looks like the political career is over, Ernie. You better spend some time now concentrating on staying out of the Greybar Hotel.
Glad to see that Ernie Hernandez lose, damn annoying. Hopefully, he will go to his printing shop and stay out of politics. As for Raul, send that bastard to prison. Save Ernie a spot, he is heading that way.
Sorry for being heartless, but talk about wasted votes on Enrique Escobedo Jr.? I understand that you want to honor or show support but the votes could have gone to another candidate. I'm sure that Mr. Escobedo would have wanted it that way? The American way!
Daniel Robles, you got your ass handed to you! The people voted for the one they had more confidence in and knowing that Art McDonald would not quit! You little shit, now you will have to work for a living and not sucking on the taxpayer tit or get money from your convicted felon friends of JIm Solis and Marc Rosenthal! Oh yea! You have to park in the front of the county courthouse now! LOL!!!
Don't be sorry about the comment on Enrique Escobedo, just say your name. Don't be a fucking little pussy.
Karma is a bitch!
CA
In the end however 99% of the dumbocRATS ARE STILL CORRUPT
I am celebrating that the Hernandez clan has been voted out of office. Good riddance Erin and Ernie. I think both of you have sucked on the tits of the taypayers money for too long and some on the side. OOOps sorry. I better stop sharing my opinions now because I don't want Erin to copy them and take more of the police is time from fighting real crime and file a complaint against me for speaking my opinions. La pobre cant handle people sharing their opinions about her and her crooked dad and family. Now she is going to have lots of time to be filing frivolous lawsuits against us people who speak our opinions about them. Just remember Erin, in case you don't remember the new Texas law, if you file suit and you lose, you are responsible for the other parties attorney fees and any costs in defending your frivolous suits. For what I have seen since you have been a JP, I don't even think you even seen real court petitions or knowledgeable in the law.... One thing for sure, A BIG THANK YOU to the voters who voted these criminal clowns out of office. This should show all the other elected officials in office that times are changing and taxpayers are getting fed up of the corruption.
Too bad Jessica Tetreu isn't up yet. That dumb bitch has got to go!
LOL! @ 7:37
Letty Perez-Garzoria should invest in some dry erase campaign signs. I'm certain she will run at least 20 more times so why spend money every three months when you can simply go write the new office and dates on there then erase them for next time.
And Jim Barton isn't crying. He's happy. Garzoria is a repeat customer of his so her losing is good for him.
In all seriousness though, the bitch got more votes than Ernie or Erin did. They had everyone against them but still pretty impressive by Letty La Pelona Perez-Garzoria.
The real story in Cameron County is the low voter turn-out, even in a contentious election. In a county with a population of over a quarter million people, less than 20,000 voted. That's a shame and those who are not willing to participate ensure that corruption will continue....because the corruptors buy votes and engage the people. Those that don't vote should never complain...but they will.
I cannot understand how a person like Sylvia Garza-Perez could have mustered as many votes as she did. As you may recall, she left the cameron county democratic party in shambles when she ran it. Its amazing anyone would vote for this person who brings nothing to the office she is seeking. She has been a failure all her life. Keep in mind she is extremely tight with Ernie Hernandez and his clan.
The Brownsville Herald could do a lot to end voter apathy by reporting on candidates and important issues BEFORE elections.
Letty Garzorra isn't the only choronic loser. Don de Leon can never seem to win either. They are either determined, stubborn or stupid for running over and over. The worst part is that they run for whatever comes up which tells me that they don't even care about the position, they just want to be elected. They're obsessed with having some sort of power. They probably figure if Jessica Tetro could be elected so can they.
As for the amount of votes that sylvia garza perez got, my 2 guesses arethat people like caca/shit and/or her relative becerra got her lost of shadow votes period. There is no other explantions on this planet.
