IS JULIETA REACHING FOR THE BRASS RING AGAIN?

By Juan Montoya
Have you heard the latest scuttlebutt about why University of Texas at Brownsville President Julieta Garcia stepped down from her bid for president of the Brownsville branch of the new and improved UT at the Rio Grande Valley?
Well, it seems that some insiders close to the Prez say that she is throwing her hat in the ring for a shot at being named UT chancellor to replace Dr. Francisco Cigarroa in Austin.
Now, before you break up and start laughing your head off, let's not forget that if anyone can twist arms and connive with the best of them, Garcia is one of them.
Just look at how long she has been able to wring the local community college district (Texas Southmost College) into subsidizing the oil-and-gas rich UT System under the so-called "partnership."
She was able to wring more than $1 billion from the district taxpayers over the 22-year history of the Match Hatched in Hell in yearly "transfers" from TSC to UT. And she was able to convince the taxpayers to issue $68 million in construction bonds which they will be paying for decades to come to build monuments to such luminaries of public education like Mary Rose Cardenas, among others.
So while some of us may guffaw at having her named to the post of chancellor, stranger things have happened. After all, the Brownsville City Commission is going to consider selling Lincoln Park to the UT System and has already offered them some 70 acres at rock bottom prices to lure them (and Julieta) to stay here.
We'll keep our ears close to the ground on this one. In the unlikely event this turns out to be true, talk about lowering the bar on the chancellorship.

Let's hope she doesn't take her autocratic management style to UT System and embarrass our community. Will she take Mary Rose Kardenas as her "special assistant" for fraud and corruption. Julieta has the ego to think she deserves this position, but those close to the UT System know how much baggage she would take to that job.

Dr. Francisco Cigarroa was ousted because he did not bow down to the UT board to get rid of the UT-Austin President and his troubles. Garcia did apply for the RGV president position and according to my sources her application was passed over.

Though hundreds of millions of dollars were funneled to the UT-System from the ignorant citizens from Brownsville and surrounding areas, Garcia is owed nothing she had her own treasure chest in Brownsville. Her current administrative staff will have nothing left after the deadline imposed on UTB, and some have jumped ship already. Some of you should start looking now.

UTB should never have become UTB; it should have remained nothing more than a satellite for Pan American. Its future will be nothing more than a morgue for the medical school. From beginning to end power corrupted its future and greed got them in the end.

The worst part is KRGV channel 5 mentioned in a news cast the medical school will not guarantee local valley students entry to the medical school. The more things change the more things remain the same.

Juliet always has her pudgy little hand out for a brass ring that will benefit her and her gigantic ego. We understand that UT System has 4 candidates for the UT-RGV...and Juliet knew she wasn't one of the 4....so she gave us the story that she will resign in 2015. Not sure she has the credentials for that position...but because she is Hispanic and a female (so they say)...she may be a "politically correct" choice....discarding credentials.

Hitler was "named" Chancellor of Germany, look what happened!

I would not bet your lunch money on her getting that gig.

The rumor mill at UTB is seldom right.

If you notice, the new Dean of the medical school is from Cuba by way of Florida. The biggest mistake any university can make is to put some local yahoo in charge. All it does is foster cronyism, nepotism and petty, chicken shit bickering. UTB accomplished all of the above in spades. Now it is relegated to SATELLITE status with no standing whatsoever. Good work, gang.

If UT Systems want to become a COLOSSAL FAILURE then julieta garcia is your woman to accomplish it.

I agree with the other posters that it will not happen. Julieta may have applied for the Chancellor position, but the Board of Regents will not give her application any consideration. If Cigarroa had stayed on, she might have been able to wrangle an associate chancellor position. Instead, the Board will hire some national known and sought after higher education guru.

I always found President Garcia to be a sweet person and polite in dealing with me. But, at the same time, my observations of her management of UTB over some ten years convinced me that she was incompetent to be a university president---in my opinion.

After fleecing the local jerks with over a billion shekels and making her partners in crime millionaires off she will fly away on her broom stick to greener pastures.
