NOW MINERVA WANTS A RECOUNT, FORKS OVER $4,500

By Juan Montoya
Add Minerva Peña to Gloria Rincones in asking for a recount of the races they lost.
Peña came in third of four candidates for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Place 3 with 2,381 votes, 108 behind runoff candidate Pete Avila, with 2,489. Mary Esther Garcia failed to garner the 50 percent plus 1 vote needed to win with 2,628. Albert Garcia came in fourth with 1,133.
In fact, Avila and Peña tied in the early vote with 1,423 apiece. Avila's election day total of 1,045 carried him over Peña's 951.
According to Election Department rules, each candidate requesting a recount will be charged $100 per precinct and the early vote. In Peña's case, it will total 45 precincts for a total cost of $4,500.
Rincones, on the other hand, will have to shell out $10,300 to pay for the recount of 102 precincts plus the early vote. She and Magallanes faced off each other for the Democratic Party nomination for the 357th District Court. Rincones trailed Juan Magallanes with 119 votes. She got 8,048 to Magallanes 8,167.
Elect ions department employees said that it hasn't been decided where and when the Peña recount will be held, while the Rincones recount is scheduled for Monday.
"She's paying $4,500 for a recount and she didn't even pay for that many campaign signs," said a courthouse watcher. "Usually, the differences are tiny, maybe four or five votes. Let's see what comes out in the end."

Is it true that the city is going to move that Stillman house? Looks like Shergold's complaint got their attention.

Hoping to see a recount of the clerk's race! Smells fishy, very fishy.

Also, the $10,000 is just a deposit. The actual cost should be much less for a machine recount, just feeding ballots into the machine for an hour, and paying a few staff to be there to oversee it while the machine spits out the numbers. The majority of that money will most likely be refunded to the candidate. Guessing total cost $3500, for a county wide race? where it gets expensive is a hand recount, paying people by the hour to count each ballot one by one. But a machine recount is fast and cheap.

Let's hope this re-count disqualifies Pete "Sexual Abuser" Avila. If Rincones were to win, that would be good for Elia Conejo Lopez and bad for Gilberto Hinojosa and his corruptors.
