TONY, WE HARDLY KNOW YOU...

By Juan Montoya
After three years in office when he rarely visits his Mexican counterparts in Matamoros, it is little wonder that local newspapers columnists mistake Hizzoner Tony Martinez for someone else.
That was the case with the official Charro Days (Fiestas Mexicanas) coverage in Matamoros El Bravo newspaper when it took photos of Martinez at the Gateway Bridge for the traditional Binational Salute with Mayor Leticia Salazar.
The caption of the photo identified Da Mayor as "Tony Garza" instead of Tony Martinez. Likewise, in the story about the event, he was also identified as Garza. You remember that Tony Garza, a former Cameron County judge who went on to be named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. After leaving that position, Garza remains one of the most influential business and legal consultants to American companies seeking to do business in that country.
Of course, Martinez would dearly love it if the Obama administration would consider him, for an ambassadorial position a la Tony Garza, but that dream might never come true, For the meantime, however, perhaps if our Tony would visit Matamoros occasionally, these kinds of mistakes wouldn't happen.

Da Mayor missed his opportunity. When his term expires he will fade into oblivion. His objective was all about the money (for himself).

Pat Ahumada had more on the go. The problem there, he had a retarded City commission. Low mentality.

Political appointment, the office of mayor was just a calculated measure and stepping stone
to being appointed as a US Ambassador, he lost on that bet, something like $1M.

The Herald regularly gets names wrong....but not knowing the current mayor just makes it clear that the Herald has no "proofreaders" and there is obviously little editorial review. That's what happens when the newspaper changes from journalism to being a "bargain book".
