By Juan Montoya
He may be the Chief Municipal Judge for the City of Brownsville, but to those who grew up in Brownsville and attended schools here, he's simply Ben.
Today Ben is having his birthday. Don't ask us how old he is. Let's just say he is the quintessential eternal youth.
When Ben isn't off supporting bike rides to Puerto Bagdad on the Mexican side of the river in support of the municipal government there, he may be seen downtown with his buddy George Ramirez supporting live music and a restoration of downtown Brownsville.
His and Ramirez's Half Moon have become the live-music anchor for jazz, blues, and good old rock and roll. The shows are usually held Thursday through Saturday. And lately, on Wednesdays, the classical guitar performances by UTB and TSC professors and students give the building a classical, almost sublime tenor. Professor Jon Dotson, who UTB let go and which TSC luckily picked up, plays classic selections like those of Tarrega, Albenez. Even the Preludes by Heitor Villalobos' are performed by these talented musicians.
On any given day, he and his Earthmen will get on he stage and belt out a few. His Don Pedro's birthday anniversary has turned into the annual event before Charro Days.
On this day we wish Ben a happy birthday
and many more to come.
