The debate on what to do with properties owned by the city has been joined.
Once considered the exclusive domain of Hizzoner Da Mayor and city contract attorney Mark Sossi to do as they wished, it appears now that some city commission members are now chafing at the autocratic way in which the duo has manipulated the purchase of real estate and their proposals to dispose of them by giving them cut-rate – including Lincoln Park – to the oil-and-gas wealthy UT System.
At the latest city commission meeting, some commissioners finally spoke out and demanded that the planning staff – mainly Planning Director Ramiro Gonzalez – show them what city properties the administration will list with the Rio South Texas Economic Council.
Gonzalez had prepared a color-coded map indicating which properties could be sold, which had holds on the and which could not.
Of all the commissioners, only Martinez, they were told, had seen the color-coded map.
As a service to its membership, the RSTEC provides property listings for members, and commissioners, particularly District 3 Commissioner Deborah Portillo, asked for a list of vacant properties the city owns.
The Brownsville Herald reported that Portillo had heard that the city staff was also reaching out to private landowners to offer listing services for them. Gonzalez said his department had not had time to include those properties on the initial list, but suggested it was in the works.
“That’s a service the city can provide,” Portillo said.
What was not discussed by the commissioners during the meeting was the move by the city (or is it Martinez) that the city was offering office space to the city of Matamoros for a token $1 payment a year. Sources in that Tamaulipas border city indicate that the deal has already been closed and that they are waiting to see where it will be located.
At one time, Martinez and the planing staff had considered selling City Plaza to the UTB but the negative feedback made them back off. Another time, congressman Filemon Vela Jr. was also going to be allowed the rental of a large section of the same building for a token $1 rental that included a large parking space and the removal of the city employees there.
When a controversy erupted overt that, Vela and Martinez backed off and the congressman opened his congressional office at his legal firm.
Currently, there is a debate on whether the city should offer Lincoln Park to the UTB and replace it with another park at another location.

"Currently, there is a debate on whether the city should offer Lincoln Park to the UTB and replace it with another park at another location."
No. The deal in the works was/is to sell the park and use the money for some nebulous bicycle shit.
I've never seen Shit give a Shit, dumb ass Dummy.
So, now the local taxpayers will get stuck with a bill for housing some element of the Matamoros city government. Wow, this city commission is really incompetent. And, they don't have a list of city properties already????? Some commissioners should have asked for that list long ago and should have been providing oversight. The "Stillman Shack" remains an eyesore on Linear Park and now the city is "giving" away facilities to other governments. Would Matamoros do the same for Brownsville....NEVER!!!! 'Da Mayor continues to play his role as "patron" and can't seem to see that his is being screwed regularly by the people he thinks he is helping.....with, of course, our tax dollars at stake, not his. Autocratic government is surely "third world" and since the "shoe fits" we should "wear" the label. We be 3d world!!!
Da Mayor plans to move the Stillman Shack to Mat. It will be a cultural exchange. Da Mayor will be disguised in a Border Petrolio costume. The City Commish will follow wearing Mini-Skirts China Poblana dresses .
