Extreme South Texas and the Mexican border did not escape the war hysteria that gripped the United States during World War II. Rumors of German spies disboarding off submarines at Boca Chica Beach and spies crossing the border to wreak mayhem among our peaceful population abounded at the time. This led local authorities to do their part to keep vigilant and alert for the agents of Nazidom. This watchtower located somewhere in the rural area somewhere off Southmost is but one manifestation of that vigilance. The local newspaper – citing security concerns – would not tell its readers where it was located as not to alert the enemy. At one time, local leaders thought the Japanese or Nazis could foment a Pearl Harbor-like attack on the shipping at the Port of Brownsville (or shrimp fleet?). It may seem silly now, but then again, those were different times.

Juan, pendejo, that's a tower used in the fields to keep an eye on you and other farmworkers!
They should build the stripes stores in brownsville atop one of these! That way, all the fat, obese asses in brownsville would burn a calorie or two going up and down the stairs! Should change the name from brownsville, to lardassville! Chingan se otro taco brownsville! Ha ha ha!
In 1943, my father who was a Captain with U,S,. Internal intelligence services spotted a U- Sub off Boca Chica leaving two saboteurs . They were followed and arrested near Corpus. They were men who looked like Clark Kent. They were on the way to Ohio to meet with the Bund. Needless to say after they were interrogated and shot. The penalty for espionage during war time is the firing squad.
The ONLY comment that is worth the space is that of anonymous at 12:39 pm.
In 1944, My mother who was a nurse in the Army and stationed at Port Isabel spotted a shrimp boat off Boca Chica leaving two lavaplatos. They were followed and arrested near Los Tomates Bridge. They were men who looked like Clark Kunt. They were on their way to Mata for a few frias. Needless to say they were let go. The penalty for drinking was nothing.
