MARTINEZ: "PSST, CAMERON COUNTY, I GOT THIS BRIDGE..."

By Juan Montoya
Flush with victory after having unloaded $2.3 million in city money for his buddy's Casa Del Nylon, City of Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez now wants to unload some of his vast real-estate holdings in the name of civic responsibility and to help it with office space.
The commissioners court has already purchased the old Brownsville Independent School District property across the Madison Street for the relocation of the Cameron County Elections Office. That would free up the space now occupied by elections to be used for the relocation of the Justice of the Peace offices now occupying space on the second floor of the county's judicial wing.
To that end, he has offered two choice pieces of real estate to the county for the commissioners' consideration.
One of the buildings is the two-story legal office building at 855 E. Harrison. The other is the legal office he built across the street from his current office in the old county jail on 1206 Van Buren caddy corner from the Brownsville Herald.
However, sources tell us that the parcels are  mite pricey.
"Three years ago when he first became mayor he approached some county officials asking $750,000 for the Van Buren property," said a county insider. "That used to be an old warehouse but he fixed it up real nice. But it's not worth that much."
The Cameron County Appraisal District does not have an updated appraisal on the 1206 Van Buren. It simply lists the value of the land at $67,000.
The appraisal of the office building at 855 E. Harrison is listed at $237,000.
That is way below what Da Mayor is asking for the properties. Sources tell us that he is still asking $750,000 for the Van Buren remodeled warehouse and $500,000 for the office building at 855 E. Harrison.
So far, it doesn't seem like the commissioners are going to bite , but that doesn't seem to have deterred Da Mayor from trying. Will the county commissioners make like the City of Brownsville commissioners and give Tony the inflated prices he wants for the properties after he whispers sweet nothings in their ear?
It's not like Da Mayor is hurting. His home on Palm Boulevard is appraised at $285,000 and his condo on South Padre Island comes in at a cool $265,000. Those, apparently, are not for sale.
But if the county commissioners bite, we're sure that Tony has this bridge and a Casa Del Nylon he wants to sell them.

Hopefully the county commissioners will get property in a more central place....and leave Tony holding his real estate fiascos....his "white elephants". There are better places for county offices.

No checks and balances puro YES. Whatever he wants he gets. Longoria, Portillo, Jessica, Villarreal are a bunch of puppets.

What a shame. Brownsville could be much much better than, McAllen but not with this clowns in charge.

The modern method is to pray and others stuff your pockets. In return when you notice your buddies praying, you stuff their pockets. Pretty simple religion these days.

All of you are wrong - he is praying and asking the BOSS,
God, "Please, please tell me how to be a mayor. Because I am a freaking moron and don't know anything."

If his property is worth so much, someone needs to adjust his property taxes ASAP
