Let's see. The recent humanitarian crisis caused by the torrent of undocumented Central American children has seen the likes of U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the Gov. of Texas Rick Perry, Texas U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. even Texas State Sen. Ted Cruz, and countless others come to the border and spin their stands.
Predictably, Republicans blame President Barack Obama for not doing anything. The Democrats blame the George Bush order not to send unaccompanied children back on their own to the violence-wracked countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
Virtually everyone, from the Catholic hierarchy, the vigilantes and the liberals have taken advantage of their 15 minutes of fame to make their point.
About the only one we haven't seen is Hizzoner Da Mayor Tony Martinez. Given the fact that Brownsville is on the U.S.-Mexico border, that the Ft. Brown Border Patrol detention center is near us, and that the river over which these unfortunates cross is scant blocks away from City Hall, one would think that Martinez would be at the forefront of this morally-charged issue.
But, alas, no Tony.
If, as has been reported elsewhere, Martinez has been angling for a diplomatic post with the Obama Administration, wouldn't this be the perfect soapbox for him to show the president that he has the mettle to defend his administration?
Or maybe – unlike Charro Days and his Satte of the City extravaganza – undocumented children and women aren't as sexy?
He's too busy trying to unload his downtown properties on Cameron County at exorbitant prices. When he's not busy doing that he is also busy trying to deliver the city's assets to the UT System for a song. When not doing that, he is arranging for the city to engage in other speculative ventures in downtown real estate.
So what if the honchos for the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security, the Texas Department of Public Safety, etc., have all had their say and are awaiting federal bucks to flow to stem eh tide and care for the children and women making the long and dangerous trek to our doorstep? What's in it for the city?
Well, someone floated the idea that perhaps the empty Casa Del Nylon property the mayor bought from his buddy Abraham Galonsky could be used a s shelter for the Central Americans while the Dept. of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processed them out of the Rio Grande Valley.
That went over like a lead balloon given that the building lacks all the amenities and has become a favorite target of downtown homeless and vandals.
Someone apparently told the refugees that Brownsville was out of the loop because the majority of them abandoned the Brownsville crossing and prefer to cross farther upriver instead before they turn themselves over to the Border Patrol.
When even the undocumented avoid Brownsville, something has to be wrong. Where's Da Mayor when you need him?

Tony will likely pop up at the fund raiser for the Democratic Party in Austin this weekend. Hizzoner needs to again show his support for Obama who will be there. We expect Gilberto Hinojosa, the State Democratic Party Chair to be there too....but Gilberto isn't expected to contribute financially as Tony will. This will be a small dinner at a private home....but expected to be over $25,000 a plate....or more depending on how much an individual can give the Party.
Da Mayor is disguised as Chabelo among the Central American children crossing the Rio Bravo. He was spotted by a U.S. border patrolman but lost him among the children. He took anew disguise as the Mexican Pied Piper .
Thank goodness for Henry Cuellar....he seems to be the only elected official in the RGV with a pair of balls. He is challenging the administration, while other local Democratic officials continue to be quiet and kiss Obama's ass on everything. Local Democrats, including Tony Martinez have been invisible, or only pop out of their holes when Nancy Pelosi or some other really big Democrat pops up. Otherwise, it seems out local officials are non-committal and ghosts to this immigration mess. The Lucios, Eddie Jr. and the "Turd" have no comment....they apparently feel safer not having anything to say...or they don't want to take any position on any controversial issue. Same with Tony Martinez as well. Even Carlos Cascos has been very quiet....after all its election time. Joe Rivera has never had an individual thought in his life, and will continue to say whatever Gilberto wants him to say. Filemon Vela has shown up at various times, but doesn't seem to have any position except go with his Party....which is the problem. Same with Ruben Hinojosa....never a unique thought in his head either...worthless dead baggage in Congress, except to vote the party line. Again, seems Henry Cuellar is the only Valley official that has a "pair".
Henry has a pair of turnips. Hinojosas a pair of jelly beans , the Turds a pair of garlic heads, Tony a pair of lead pellets, Carlos a pair of erasers, Bohner a pair of rabbit pellets, Etc
Cellar has a pair of Aces !!
Is the beloved Republican Party doing anything ?
This is the same Obama who is much more interested in high stakes political payola in Austin than the plight of thousands of Latin American child immigrants that the Meskins voted for like crazy. He will be within a few hours drive or minutes by flight to where the tragedy (which he is directly responsible for) is occurring but he could give a shit. Go on and keep voting for people like Obama and "Antonio" Martinez.
Like so many local Dumbokrats, Tony Martinez is a "ditto head" for Obama and has no individual thoughts that we can find on any record. Tony serves Obama and likely will give enough money to get a diplomatic position...for which Tony is totally unqualified, as he has proven as mayor. Tony has been worthless for the citizens of Brownsville as mayor, but as mayor has tried to support Queen Julieta Garcia as she has ravaged UTB and this community. Tony used tax dollars to buy real estate to support Julieta....that backfired as she leaves UTB in a lurch....leaves so many of her faculty friends without tenure and no job security...but she seems to survive while those around her drown in the misery Julieta created at UTB and TSC. Tony Martinez is surely proven he isn't a leader....just that he is an asskisser to his friends. He doesn't think about the citizens...actually he seems to be afraid of us....he just serves himself and his friends. Oh, for the days of his predecessors; regardless.
Everyone is moving their Jaws. Much Ado about Nothing. Next week, the Camel-drivers will be crossing the Rio Grande. They will be resettled in the Mojave Desert and Death Valley.. A joint committe will be formed to study the situation. Sen. Teodoro de la Cruz will be the Chairman and Sara Palin will supervise.
Da Mayor will be inAustin disguised as an alien In a Charro costume . His pants will be lined wit silver pesos. To further complicate his presence , he will take anew disguise as Zorro of old California. This time not as an Alien.
In the interest of maintaing said discretion, Perry publicly released a letter to the president, responding to the greeting request. “I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Perry writes.
“I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue,” he adds.
