Eleven candidates, including one incumbent and one appointee, will vie for three seats on the Brownsville Independent School District board in November.
In a last minute shuffle, appointed BISD board member for Place 1 Cesar Lopez will be challenged by four candidates, including Place 4 incumbent Lucy Longoria who switched to that race Monday afternoon, the deadline for filing for a place on the ballot.Other candidates who filed for the Place 1 position were Rolando Guerra, Armando Rodriguez and Juan Pacheco.
In Place 2, firefighter union president Carlos Elizondo – until Monday the only candidate who had announced – will be joined by Robert Rodriguez and Susan Fox. Rodriguez is a longtime BISD employee and Susan Fox was an area and human resource administrator for the district.
And former BISD trustee and athletic director Joe Rodriguez will face two women in November. They are long time educator Shirley Bowman and Brownsville resident Mary Rey. Rodriguez had announced for place 4 – and against Longoria – last week. Rey had announced she was running for Longoria's spot but had not filed. With her entrance in the Rodriguez-Bowman race, it is apparent that she has been entered to play the "spoiler" and split the women's vote to allow Rodriguez to slide in for his umpteenth term as a BISD trustee.
With 11 candidates in the running, it is bound to be a contentious campaign as all the candidates try to snag the voters' attention.

I'm happy to see so many people in the running for these seats but where are the parents? Do any of these people even have kids in the BISD anymore? We need parents involved and interested in how our money is spent rather than people just looking to use the district as their own personal piggy bank.
All lack morale courage and most don't have a clue about academic achievement and the problems BISD has. With any three, corruption will continue and ignorance will prevail.

According to the Brownsville Herald's Laura B. Martinez (August 17, 2011):
"Two years after Aaron Castillo was shot and killed outside his Garden Park home, a third suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting, police report.
Court documents show that Rodolfo Bolivar, 32, was arrested by Brownsville police July 28 on a murder warrant. Bolivar remains jailed at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito in lieu of $1 million bail.
Bolivar, along with his brother Randall Bolivar, 25, and Rolando Garza, 32, allegedly shot Castillo over a dispute about $500 that Castillo’s brother owed to Randall Bolivar back in February 2009.
The physical confrontation began at a convenience store and as Castillo attempted to flee, his car was rammed by an unknown vehicle, police have said.
Castillo, 30, managed to drive to his home in the 200 block of Garden Park Street and as he was getting out of his pickup, he was shot multiple times by two gunmen."
(So not only are the brothers charged with killing Castillo, but they also shot the wrong man. It was Castillo's brother, police allege, that owed Randall Bolivar the money, not the victim.)

The Castillo brothers and father were/are pieces of shit who never held a job in their lives. They live off my and your taxes!! One one of them is now facing a 20 years sentence for agravated robbery.
We, the neighbors, wish they all go to jail or move out. They prey on young kids to buy their drugs. We are sick of the Castillo in this neighborhood, but the police don't do shit about it.
My vote is for Coach Bowman. Although I grew up poor she always told us we could accomplish anything if we believe.
She was great in teaching History. Yes she was rough and verbally outspoken but she was always fair with the students.
She treated us all equal no matter our race nor where we came from.

I no longer live in Brownsville, but heard a friend of mine mention Coach Bowman from Cummings M.S. was gonna run for the school board.

liked maybe she was outspoken but no one can ever say she did not care for students and her athletes. Either one of the Bowman sisters would make a great school board member.
Bowman dont let these people with negative comments damper your spirits,
they just afraid of a new class of board members that will truly look what is best for the district and the students.
Not everyone joins the board to reward they pocket books nor they family members with lots of cash.
If I am correct Coach Bowman has no loyalties to anyone and no family members in the district.
So vote for Coach Bowman to make change and bring leadership back to the students and the district.
Remember at the end of the day, its the students that we should work for to help them succeed.

We know Shirley Bowman!! She's is a horrible human being who believes to be above any rules the district has. Do not vote for this woman, you will regret it.
On the other hand Joe Rodriguez is an old dinosaur who disposes of the monies collected at games as if it was his own. Reports would show this. I don't know Mrs Rey personally, but I heard great things about this lady. My family and I, would be voting for Mary Rey, Cesar Lopez, and Robert Rodriguez
