BROWNSVILLE, TX - The world's first vertical rocket launch site will be at Boca Chica Beach, on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico and saddling the Rio Grande.
Space Exploration Technologies' founder Elon Musk announced this morning the strategic decision to build a site in the outskirts of Brownsville, Texas, where the company plans to launch its signature Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX already has launch sites at Vandenburg, California and Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The much anticipated decision finally came, after more than 3 years of analyzing sites in Georgia, California, Virginia, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Florida. Within Texas, SpaceX was originally considering about a dozen locations from Cameron County to about 90 miles north, in the King Ranch area, but ultimately, Brownsville became the lone Texas finalist. Earlier this month, the project was given the green light by the Federal Aviation Administration, as part of the federal environmental process.
"What a historical moment for the greater Brownsville region and the State of Texas. It's the culmination of a dream and a vision, which began more than three years ago," said Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez. "We will ensure that SpaceX has everything it needs in order to be successful in the Greater Brownsville Borderplex."
"The team effort would have never succeeded but for the immense support of the people of Brownsville, all of its surrounding neighbors and the state – to all of you 'mil gracias," added Mayor Martinez, who was instrumental in the incentives process and negotiations.
The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation committed $5 million as part of the overall incentives package proposed to SpaceX for the vertical rocket commercial launch site and command center.

First off, mayor, if you really want this Space-X deal to good smooth - step down from mayor because you don't know what you are doing. Also, make sure you take with you all the other commissioner bozos that don't know anything either. "mil gracias"?? what the hell is this?? We are not in Mexico, sir!!! Brownsville is in the United States of America!!! Don't encourage this upon us proud American citizens. Geez, every store you go to now they greet you in Spanish because they do not know English. So what - are you all going to start executing your meetings in Spanish now?? Geez!!! "mil gracias", moron!! What a mess.
Forget about the mil gracias. Think about all the nature that will die when the rockets start going up in the sky. What about when we get a hurricane? Did this company pick Brownsville because of the proper infrastructure or because it was cheap and the ignorant citizens didnt raise a finger to protest in a more public way? What about when we start getting accidents (like in Florida) or our environment starts suffering the changes because of all the man made waste? Are the mayor and comissioners going to be there to say "mil gracias", "thank you" or whatever? Probably not. They will be laughing at us all the way to the bank. Ah, but it will bring millions (so they say). For who? Them? or us?
Nah; we'll be o.k......pretty sure united brownsville will get some crook to be project manager and take care of everything.
