SOMETIMES THE BEST VACATION SPOT IS OUR OWN BACKYARD

(Ed's Note: Not to be outdone by out-of-town vacation photographs sent in by our readers, a local resident (SJ Castillo) from 18 miles just north of Brownsville offered us a few of his own part of our little paradise here. We often forget what a unique place of the state and world we live in, but a gander at some of these photos from his back yard  show us the reason that the Rio Grande Valley has become a birders' paradise and a huge boost to the economy through ecotourism. That looks like a flock of pelicans on the bottom photo which is framed by nopales de castilla and huisache. Thanks for the pics, SJ!)

I totally agree with the title of your article.
A friend of mine retired just this year and asked me what he and his wife could do to spend some "vacation" time without spending a lot of money now that they both live on a retirement pension. I have been retired for a year and have spent time in our national parks (locally we have several here in the RGV), the zoo, the beach, the history, the culture that many time we as natives do not appreciate or even bother to know something about. Winter Texans and people from other parts of the world (not just Mexico) come to the RGV to find out about the history and culture of the area and we spend most of the time criticizing the negatives and placing a slight touch only on the positives.
