The last time that local attorney Erneto Gamez (Earnest Games to his bilingual friends) was in the media spotlight, he was the local counsel for Austin lawyer Marc Rosenthal.
Before that, he was more closely identified with defending former Cameron County Sheriff Conrado Cantu.
Today, his mug is featured on the front page of the Brownsville Holler (from where we lifted this photo) as the lead attorney defending accused kidnapper and killer Marco Antonio Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is charged with killing Ivan Reyes in June leading to a standoff with police.
The Cameron County District Attorney's Office announced at his Thursday hearing that they will not seek the death penalty against Gonzalez, a sort of victory for Gonzalez.
Prosecutors, acquainted with the pronouncements of Gamez during trials, sought and got a gag order from 404th state District Judge Elia Cornejo Lopez, a move that prompted the acerbic Gamez to say that prosecutors were fond of issuing statements to the media when it was to hteir benefit.
Nonetheless, anytime Gamez is in court, he has a penchant to make grandiose provocative statements, something that DA Luis Saenz probably was trying to prevent.
Gamez has a hard road to hoe with the Gonzalez case since the case attracted widespread media coverage of the standoff and included scenes of the woman hostage running out the house and the body of the killed man being wheeled out before the cameras.
By the way, Gamez's former clients did not fare well.
In the case of Marc Rosenthal, he is serving a 20-year prison sentence for his role in the judicial bribery and racketeering cases, and Cantu – who Gamez at first defended but later recused himself over a conflict of interest with another client – is serving 27 years in federal prison.

i remember Gamez got a certain female high school teacher from Pace out of a bind a few years ago then he slept withher. funny she was related to elia cornejo lopez or was it migdalia lopes. At the same time a male teacher from Hanna got the book. But all this was when Limas was running the circus.

Juan heard that Manuel Valdez was released from Prison today, hum wow, wasn't luis saenz the special prosecutor on that one and he he got the guy a death sentence, good thing this guy wasn't executed cause then the county would be in a bigger stink shity hole. good job luis
