Overlooked by many in the recent race between Joe Rivera and Carlos Cascos for the Cameron County Judge's position is the role of a local public relations firm that went head to head against the hired ad guns of the Texas democratic Party...and won.
If you saw the front-page story in the local daily today, you will see County Judge Carlos Cascos, administrative assistant Cris Valadez and the 800-pound gorilla in the room, Pink Ape Media Consultants principal Rodrigo Moreno.
They are checking out the results (albeit lamentably late) of the judge's race at Elva's Restaurant on Elizabeth Street.
If you are a political addict, you probably kept a track of the ads that emanated from both sides of the contest during the election cycle. On Rivera's side, the ads were probably created by a firm from up north in Texas (probably San Antonio or Austin) and the disclaimer stated that it was paid by the Cameron County Democratic Party Executive Committee.
Since the chairman of the state Democratic party is none other than former County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa who has worn the hats of county party chairman and county judge as well, it may have been the state party who was battling on all fronts against Cascos and his local ad agency.
We have known Moreno for many years since he was a layout editor at El Bravo and when he helped us lay out the tabloid Crossroads oh so many years ago.
He's come a long ways since. And, when arrayed against the high-priced ad firm from the Big City, he performed like a champ and the results show it.
By the way, Pink Ape also conducted the media campaign by Cesar Lopez and Joe Rodriguez, both winners in the Brownsville Independent School District races. One hundred percent for November 4 ain't bad.
Pink Ape, we've been told, runs its own electorate research and polling and positions advertising to specific audiences and cohorts. They also place television and billboard ads as well as Tweeter, Facebook and other social media that they produce in-house. So far, so good.
We extend out congratulations to Moreno and his crew over at Pink Ape, even though we were on the losing end on a couple of our candidates ourselves. That's the way the ballots crumble. Congrats!
Here's the ad they ran.

Brilliant, just brilliant. Many people
know you can't screw around with a smart CPA. Only the politically ignorant think otherwise.
The Judge stayed positive and actually talked about issues. The other guy just did what Gilberto said. Good advertisement right on target. Talk about local talent.
They had a great candidate. Looking good Pink Apes!
What exactly did Cascos do to put the corrupt and criminal elements in prison and what is going to do about the ones still around?
Forget that! You idiots voted for Joe Rodriguez for the school board? Well, here we go! Money going into selected pockets and back at Joe!
I am very happy that Carlos Cascos won, and great job Rodrigo, Chris.. Great job
Like many elected politicians, Mr. Cascos will leave a wealthy person at the expense of tax-payers money when he leaves office.
The county judge position is not the same as a courtroom judge. Googleyalo idiota.
