No sooner had the word got out that Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large A Estela Chavez-Vasquez had to leave the city commission due to residency problems that at least one candidate to replace her announced he is running for the position.
Local attorney Cesar de Leon – a St. Mary's Law School graduate who also did post-graduate studies in Spain – announced he will seek the position. De Leon made his announcement in front of the Reynaldo Garza-Filemon Vela Memorial federal courthouse against the backdrop of the Charles Stillman Laureles Ranch House being restored at the linear park in front.
His theme was one of returning to the foundations of municipal government and of putting municipal government to work to foster economic development and good jobs for city residents.
Braving the cold on a blustery day, de Leon thanked "all who've traveled and braved the cold.”
He went on stating:
“We are all here for a reason. It's humbling, but in my heart I know you didn't come here just for me, you came here because you believe in what this city can be.”
De Leon focused on his plans to bolster economic development and job creation and the upgrading of city services. At the core of his plans, he told the news media representatives and his supporters, was to "tie in education with family and community development. In his press release, de Leon says the city needs "a new breed of politicians who feel involvement and active listening are the keys to a successfully representing the people of Brownsville."
A Brownsville native who attended St. Mary’s Elementary and St. Joseph’s Academy, de Leon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. After serving his fellow classmates as Student Government President he went on to work for the Texas House of Representatives in Austin Texas and later obtained his Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio Texas. He returned to his hometown to open his own law practice, de Leon & Pizana, PLLC.
Perhaps more impressive than his legal and professional credentials is the fact that de Leon is a true bilingual, a rarity in this part of the border. He answered questions from Hispanic media reporters in impeccable Spanish.
"Este candidato si sabe hablar," said a reporter representing Mexican media. "Es muy raro que un politico de este lado sepa."
De Leon announced that he will be hosting a campaign kick-off party at Cobbleheads Restaurant in
Brownsville on Wednesday 21, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. and invited all those present to attend.

how about a candidate that forgets about all the fluff and feel good stuff and simply works to improve our basic infrastructure by widening roads such as robindale, central and coffeeport, and working with other local entities to make flooding a thing of the past?>> is that too much to ask?

It was about time to see new faces in Brownsville politics, hopefully this candidate will inspire others to return to Brownsville to make this city a better place.

Young, educated and motivated politicians is what the city of Brownsville needs. Mr. De Leon has all these qualities plus the enthusiasm to return and serve his hometown. my best wishes Cesar, I know you will work hard for the city of Brownsville, but most importantly, I know you will work harder for its people.
If there is one failure that stands out among the multitude, it is the pathetic inability of Brownsville pochos to speak literate Spanish. Es una vergüenza el tamaño del mundo.

Fresh air heading in to the city of Brownsville. A young politician may be exactly what it needs to blow out the slow and "unprogressive" dust.
We now can look up to a viable and honest public servant that can truly represent the interests of the City and its citizens. He is more than qualified with outstanding credentials .
I met Cesar De Leon at Sylvia's Swearin In.. I like the guy..He is very down to earth, respectful and intelligent. He has my vote.
He sure has a lot of people fooled. ....just like Tony Martinez when he first ran for office. Why doesn't he come out and say where he stands on the Lincoln Park issue? His main backers are Galonsky and Martinez! Come on people! Wake up!
Come on people WAKE UP.... CESAR DE LEON is a real opportunity for a change in the city. Has nothing to do with Galansky or any other group. Time will probe it.
