CITY OF BROWNSVILLE ADMINISTRATION: EVENT LONG GONE AND SIGNS STILL UP MORE THAN A MONTH LATER

(Ed.'s Note: Yesterday we published two photos contributed by one of our three readers who complained of the fine Brownsville tradition of leaving banners that go from one side of the road to the other announcing some long-past event. We wondered at what our Winter Visitors and people from other parts of the Valley and state thought about this practice. Well, after we published the post, we were told that the signs were coming down this morning in the rain. Another reader sent us this photo taken on his (her?) cell phone that shows Public Utility Board employees removing one such offending sign on Boca Chica Boulevard across from the old Golden Corral Restaurant. This particular sign was announcing something called Zoo Nights & Lights, a "holiday tradition to behold. Everyone will enjoy live performances from local bands and choirs while taking in the dazzling light displays. Browse for holiday gifts at our arts and crafts show. Plus, kids can decorate a gingerbread cookie and make a craft."
The Gladys Porter Zoo held that annual holiday celebration December 5th, 6th and 7th. Why the banners were still up on January 22, more than a month after the event was held is still beyond us. On the other hand, it might be a clever post-event strategy so that the public can see what it missed. We apologize to the PUB guy who had to endure the cold rain to allow the city administration to save face.)
