GOODBYE JOE, WE GOTTA GO AFTER 36 YEARS, ME-OH-MY-OH

(Ed.'s Note: Cameron County Pct. 4 Commissioner Dan Sanchez arrived fashionably late, Judge Carlos Cascos wasn't present and District Attorney Luis Saenz was notable by his absence. With Pct. 2 Commissioner (and Judge Pro-Tem) Alex Dominguez serving as the master of ceremonies, Joe Rivera, a county clerk for a combined 36 years was presented with a resolution honoring his public service. Saenz's absence was surprising because Rivera had beEn his mentor since the days when Luis was  trustee with the Brownsville Independent School District and figured prominently as one of his biggest supporters when he first (and lastly) made successful runs for the DA's Office. In fact, Rivera was Padrino de Lazo for Saenz pledging before God to assist him in his personal and spiritual life, a big deal in Catholic circles. Participants wondered whether there had been a falling out between the two men since invitations were sent to all county departments for the presentation. Joe, a hardened political veteran, wasn't above making a quip about wanting to get appointed county judge rather than receiving the presentation to the amusement of the gathering. Among them was former Pct. 1 county commissioner Lucino Rosenbaum Jr., who served in the county during  Joe's tenure. The commissioners court has not decided on who will replace Cascos after is confirmation to Texas Secretary of State.
