Two Fridays from now Carl Montoya's reign as superintendent of the Brownsville Independent School District will be over.
Compared to the BISD's $500 million budget, Judson's ISD is only $166,357.212, less than half as Brownsville's, with about half the schools and about 23,000 students.
Five of the trustees at Judson are elected from single-member districts and two at-large, unlike the BISD, who run in the entire district. Hispanics make up 55 percent of the student population and Blacks make up about 22 percent. Some 70 percent are considered economically disadvantaged.
There is already talk of Montoya's holdover replacement which could be either Dr. Rita Hernandez or Carlos Guerra. Both are qualified and (as if it were a requirement) both currently hold grievances against the district.
The die was cast for Montoya's departure after the last round of elections. Incoming trustee Joe Rodriguez has made it well known that eh had other ideas for the main administrator in the BISD and it isn't Dr. Sylvia Atkinson.
Rodriguez probably figured he is on borrowed time and is trying to cram in as much activity in as little bit of time he can. Many administrators are walking on eggshells and looking over their shoulder as Coach Joe wields his ax with the consent of his three companions on the board.
With Montoya's departure, Rodriguez will have a clear path to plunder at will.

Oh my will there be some catfighting between BP and SA for the Gold? Is B Pena related to the BISD Board Member Minerva Pena? Unfortunately, all the folks in line have only cared about their pockets via grievances. Judson ISD could not find anyone else? They are taking two-steps back by hiring the BISD Sup who is decades behind in all areas.
I believe Brownsville's budget is $540,000,000. If the information you posted is correct Brownsville spends $3,608 more per student per year to the tune of $180,400,000 more than does Judson. Judson evidently does far more with their dollars than BISD.I applaud Dr. Montoya in fleeing this cesspool of incompetents. How can BISD spent so much more per student Something is definately awry and as a tax payer I question this discrepancy. This all falls on the Board and bloated administration, I guess incompetence is expensive. Taxpayers need to revolt because BISD is screwing you.
