We are only 104 days into 2015, but already Justice of the Peace Pct.2 , Place 2, Linda Salazar is out the blocks like gangbusters setting a blazing pace hitching couples over at the Cameron County courthouse.
At her current rate, with a little over one quarter of the way to the end of the year, she has already married 155 couples. At a medium-range charge of $200 per couple, she has racked up $31,000.
If her rate persists, she could well marry some 620 couples by the end of the year.
At an average of $200 a couple, this marrying JP could rack up a not inconsiderable sum of $124,000 in 2015. In Texas, JPs are allowed to keep those charges as a perk of office. Compared to her $53,708 combined salary and auto allowance, it ain't noting to be sneezed at.
The fee for a wedding ceremony varies by JPs. If they have to go out to a site over the weekend (say a Padre Island marriage), the cost could go past $250. On the other hand, if they perform the marriage in the JP court, it could vary from $150 to $200. The $200 figure, therefore, is a middle-range estimate.
By comparison, the two newest JPs in the Brownsville area don't hold a bouquet to Salazar. An information request to the Cameron County Clerk's Office shows that Salazar's 155 marriage ceremonies in the first three months of the year eclipse JP 2-2 Jonathan Gracia's 63 marriages. And JP 2-3 Maria Esther Garcia's 16 recorded marriage ceremonies equal nearly one-tenth of Salazar's total. In fact, Gracia and Garcia's total of 79 marriage ceremonies are nearly half of Salazar's total alone.
Is JP Salazar a marriage magnet? Has she garnered a reputation for the couples she married to stay married? Or has her fame spread so far and wide across the land that couples flock to her office? After all, in order for couples to reach her office, they have to pass through the corridor and right in front of Gracia's office.
The answers, perhaps, are more mundane than that.
It is rumored that she has established a network through notaries public, county clerk office staff, and other county employees to steer the business her way that has caught the eye of certain investigative bodies. Recently, a county staffer in the second floor of the judicial wing of the county courthouse said that Salazar would get a tip on her cell phone from someone at the county clerk's office next door alerting her to the issuance of a marriage license to a couple that would be making their way next door to make an appointment to have the marriage performance after the state-mandated 72-hour waiting period.
Some people were surprised to see Salazar leaning against the railing in front of Judge Art McDonald's County Court-at-Law #1 entrance. They say that Salazar met the couple as they walked toward the JP offices corridor and then guided them through McDonald's court away from the sight of JP 2-2 Gracia's staff.
"By going through McDonald's court, no one in Gracia's court could see them," said our source. "They then emerged from the door directly in front of Linda's JP court where the staff signed them up for the ceremony three days later."
We have also been told that this "arrangement" has not escaped the notice of investigative entities who are now looking into the matter. If they can confirm that calls to Salazar's cell phone are coming from a county phone next door, it could unravel the entire scheme to elbow out the other JP from the marriage ceremonies bennies.
There has been some talk about remodeling the elections office to accommodate all three Brownsville JPs in one central site. As it is, the newest JP court – Pct.2-3 – is in the Dancy Building about three blocks away. However, that might have to wait until the old BISD building across Madison Street from the Dancy Building is remodeled.
Until then, if you see Salazar or one of her office clerks leaning on the railing in front of McDonald's court, send us a photo as confirmation. Hopefully, we'll get it before other investigators do.

Don't just check the county phone lines, check the county clerk employees cells phones to Linda's and Sylvia Rodriguez's cell phone. She literally funnels bodies to one funeral home here in Brownsville, Guerra Funeral Home. Ask around, people will talk. She is a DRUNK. Go to C&C wings any given night and she's there. There are many wedding locations that will marry you for the same price in a pretty place by a resaca so you get nice pictures.
