RIVERA MASTICATES MESQUITE, 5-1, MOVES TO STATE FINAL

Embedded image permalink In a game delayed by lightning, the Brownsville Rivera Raiders advanced to the state soccer final Saturday morning after  manhandling the North Mesquite Stallions 5 to1.
Withing the first 25 minutes the charged-up Raiders scored two goals, electrifying the caravans of Brownsville fans that made the 6-hour trip to the Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, but stunning a Stallion team that hadn't allowed more than two goals all year and had shut out 15 opponents.
A Dallas Morning News headline stated simply that Rivera (27-0), which averaged five goals per game this year, was "too much" for the Stallions (22-4-1) in the UIL Boys State Semifinal 6A soccer game. Twice before, in 2005 and 2007, Rivera had advanced to the semifinals but Saturday's win pushed them to their first state final at 6:30 p.m. today against Katy Cinco Ranch (22-0-4).

After 27 years of waiting (since the school opened) The true heroes are the players; kids are humble and hardworking. Maybe this is a lesson for the BISD athletics, WE CANNOT compete with American Football, we are the best in SOCCER "futbol". Soccer only gets the support when the KIDS give it their all and GIVE RESULTS. American football, BISD coaches are paid almost the same as a principal and ALWAYS give mediocre results; high school athletic coordinators do not teach, some are too old to even jog, some have been in the system and taken advantage of it. Mr. Garcia is an excellent soccer coach, young enough to have good rapport with his players, old enough to have good enough experience, a former Hanna player under Juan de Dios Garcia. Local soccer has the support of the community, the support of the students, the fans, the players, but receives only the support of the BISD athletics when it brings in titles and trophies. American football gets all that and when was the last time a Brownsville team went to the state finals in American football? Living on past glories is like living in Peter Pan's "Neverland".
RIVERA RAIDERS: A GREAT "FUTBOL" TEAM 2015

You are absolutely right! We have our own homegrown heroes and yet UTPA cannot or will not see the great homegrown talent and instead they go recruiting players from Finland and Denmark and give them scholarships to come play while our players, filled with talent and potential, go work at McDonalds and Home Depot because the UT System for whatever reason does not support our players. Am I missing something here?
