Yesterday, the first day of early voting. interim Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza was called out by the Central City Library staffers to settle a running dispute between warring factions of at least two mayoral candidates.
It seems that incumbent Mayor Tony Martinez has personally come to the most popular early voting site to make sure his campaign signs were placed within one foot of the legally-allowed 100-foot space separate from the voting site. Tony had apparently measured off the distance and then placed his yard signs right up to the limit.
This lead other campaigns to do the same, littering the space across the drive from the drive-in return overhang and the Veterans Memorial Park with the colorful signs for – among other candidates – local restaurateur Capt. Bob Sanchez.
Sanchez's supporters said that what was good for Gander Martinez was good enough for Goose Sanchez.
In the end, the brouhaha ended with Garza taking all the offending sings and having the candidates pick them up at his office on Harrison Street.
Today, former mayor Pat Ahumada (or one of his supporters) gave the term skirting the law a new wrinkle. Using a handicapped tag, they parked a truck bearing the former mayor's campaign sign plastered on the rear window of his Chevy Silverado pickup in a handicapped space directly in front of the library's rear entrance. The sign was well withing the 100 foot prohibited distance, but then, it was bearing a handicapped tag so legally, it was permissible for the truck to be parked there.
When we were leaving the library after checking on the voting results for today, a polling place official was already making inquiries on who the truck belonged to and seeking the owner to have it removed. Gotta hand it to Martinez and Ahumada. They're both crazy as foxes!

I early voted yesterday (Monday)at the library on Central. There were Tony Martinez signs up to the gate entrance by Coria and there were Tony Martinez people on the Central entrance. Driving down on Price you could see the same thing but it was Tony Martinez and Sergio Zarate and that was at the community clinic site. That went on ALL DAY long. I know because I live down that one of the side streets.

That's ridiculous if a supporter who's truck has an Ahumada banner on it and who has permission to park in the spot because he is voting, I don't see the issue. Would you have them take the bus to vote? Reaching Montoya or in this case no mames cabron.
It doesn't surprise anyone that Tony Martinez works closely with Jerry Hedgecock the slime rat responsible for the downfall of the public library system. At city hall we enjoy when Pete Gonzales gets after Jerry for repeatedly fucking up.
