The fledgling Southmost Committee held a candidates' forum for District 1 and At Large "A" seats in this year's city commission election and voted to endorse Michael Gonzalez and Cesar De Leon for their respective seats.
An overflow crowd at a local restaurant located at the corner of Southmost Road and 20th Street served as the venue for the meeting where a defensive incumbent District 1 commissioner Ricardo Longoria faced tough questioning from residents who had complaints ranging from the condition of the streets, high utility rates and economic conditions.
"If you want to blame me, go ahead," he said at one time to questions about the apparent lack of progress in the neighborhood. "But don;t tell me that we haven't done anything because that's not true."
The committee, made up of former elected officials, activists and neighborhood residents heard the candidates speak and rendered their endorsement after the meeting.
The candidates running for District 1 are:
COMMISSIONER DISTRICT 1
1. Michael Gonzalez*
2. Ricardo Longoria Jr.
3. Roman Perez
COMMISSIONER AT-LARGE “A”
1. Cesar de Leon*
2. David Belleperche
3. Gerardo Martinez
4. Roberto Uresti.
